And brothers to whom I gave my affection,

And whose standing with me I guarded and preserved—

For how many a night of deadly peril and misery,

And death's sharp edge, I braved for their sake!

And how many a sea of ruin and death

I swam and waded through, risking my life for their sake!

They abandoned me, and my only offense against them

Was my being held cheap, since I had grown cheap.
