Will you not ask the abodes about our beloved companions
so we may ask them of the tribe once camped there?
So we may ask them about the righteous and pure souls

The change of time made them flee
swiftly; even those who stay are bound to leave.
Hastily while the resident turned nomadic

Restlessness has flown from the eyes so a lid
to wakefulness, and a heart to anxious care.

On the morning Hasan's death was announced to us, they said:
One morning we were told of Hasan’s death
'The star of noble virtues has fallen from its horizon.'
The star of glory has fallen from his horizon

with the wide expanse grown narrow around us,
And the vastness narrowed around us

tumbling to the right and to the left.
And fall to the right and left

وَعَدِّand turn away عنfrom استماعِكَyour listening to شِعْرَthe poetry of غَيريothers than me
وَعَدِّ عن استماعِكَ شِعْرَ غَيري
فأينَfor where are حَصَىthe pebbles of الطريقِthe road منَbeside اللآليpearls
فأينَ حَصَى الطريقِ منَ اللآلي
And turn away from listening to others' poetry:
And ignore hearing poetry but mine
how can roadside pebbles compare with pearls?
So where is gravel’s position from rubies?
مَكَانُthe standing of قريضِthe verse of غيريothers than me منbeside قريضيmy verse
مَكَانُ قريضِ غيري من قريضي
مَكَانُthe standing of النَّغْلِthe bastard منbeside وَلَدِa child of الحَلالِlawful wedlock
مَكَانُ النَّغْلِ من وَلَدِ الحَلالِ
The place of others' verse beside my own
The position of other’s poetry to mine
is a bastard's beside a child of lawful birth.
Is of counterfeit to lawful begotten
