Say to my treasure in calamities and my reserve,

And my beauty among humankind and my pride,

And my tongue, through which I pour forth, whenever

Speech freezes, my prose and my poetry,

And my right hand, with which I surpass the reaches

Of humankind, using less than a handspan of it,

And my breeze when the heat kindles its blaze,

And my warmth when bitter cold bites with its fang,

And my bliss whenever misery confronts me,

And my succor, to whom I turn

After my Lord, in my hardship and my ease:

In intellect, lofty in standing, lofty in worth,

The morning light of renown, the aloeswood of remembrance,

The nobleman who showed us, through his pleasing

Conduct, the way of the pure Prophet:

    Generosity amid asceticism, and modesty

Amid dignity, and chastity amid patience.

He made the ancient honor of his lineage

New again, and restored its bygone renown,

Through qualities that escape the net of counting

And overflow the compass of enumeration:

Excellence in learning, into whose valley al-Sha'bi never descended

    On any day, nor did al-Zuhri gather its fruit;

Outstanding literary mastery, which brings the men

    بَثُ رِيحُ الصَّبَا بذاكيِّ الجَمْرِ

    The east wind plays with glowing embers;

And carefully derived rulings that dispense

His answer guarantees that there remains

No doubt in the soul nor uneasiness in the breast.

United in satisfaction with it and gratitude,

Bright in its proof: you find upon it

    A trace of the judgments of Amr's slayer;

And eloquence which, had it stood between the two clans

    Of Wa'il, would have made them sheathe their cutting swords;

    بَلَ مُوسَى بهِ رِجَالَ السِّحْرِ

    Moses used to confront the men of sorcery;

Would have made him wish its author his father instead of Hujr.

Thus, in its delicate meanings and solid

Wording, it is wine displayed in goblets of stone:

Love poetry that revives what the days erased

Of the traces of chaste, 'Udhri passion.

Whoever beholds it has no excuse if he does not

    Become, in love, one who casts off restraint;

    رُقُ زُهْداً بينَ الحصَى والتِبْرِ

    In its detachment, between pebbles and gold;

And a cheerful face whose contours pour

The water of gladness upon its beholder,

    The hardship of dusty years presses upon him;

    Radiant: no beholder can distinguish

    Its splendor from that of the full moon;

And qualities from whose beauty the garden draws provisions

When it smiles through the mouths of its flowers.

A servant whom you suckled with the flowing milk of kindness

And laid upon the bedding of benevolence

    Cannot repay those mighty favors

    With anything but sincere praise.

The faces of praise are unmarked, and gain no beauty

Until branded with the bright markings of verse.

So draw forth each pearl that neither

A diver's hand nor the bed of a sea has held.

    دِ فَثَنِّي ثَنَاءَه بالعُذْرِ

    And I see that they exceed the reach of praise;

So supplement his praise with an apology.

He thought my closeness to him a hope for his wealth,

So he turned away from me, fearing my poverty.

    فَمَحَا شَطْرَهُ وأَثْبتَ شَطْرِي

    Once I had shared the wrongdoing with him;

He erased his half and established mine.

He saw it as a gain to persist

    In rejection, hatred, and estrangement:

A course I do not see people of radiant character

Treading, nor even women wearing veils.

His wealth and my poverty: I cannot escape that.

With them—and may there be no recovery from that fall!

Wealth has its mishaps; why then

Did they not count me among wealth's mishaps?

O pillar of Islam, O safeguard of the religion

Of upright faith, O beauty of the age,

I have tested the lands, east and west,

    And turned people inside out.

I have tasted every flavor, and become

An expert in everything sweet and bitter.

So I swear by those making for the House,

Bearing riders who hasten for reward:

    بِفَتىً شَاحِبٍ كَقِدْحِ المُبَرِّي

    Every lean she-camel, bow-shaped, trotting

    With a pale youth like an arrow shaft from its shaver;

And by the palms kissed by the throats of the leading

Sacrificial beasts on the morning of slaughter:

By my life, I have found none but you with a covenant

Free from the taints of treachery,

    And affection unaltered by adversity—unless

The light of dawn itself should alter.

Nothing unprecedented: the racers of Najd

Have a lead the packhorses of Egypt cannot attain.

And the aged Egyptian is on the tongues of the entire

    Community, not the new Basran.

O kinsman of Hashim ibn Abd Manaf,

Hear a plea from one offering abundant praise:

A land once relieved by your generosity's rain

    Is in need of that rain;

And a bough you clothed in leaves yesterday has become

    Today leafless, its bark withering.

Do not leave me to my modesty: the most wasting

Of all my ailments is a free man's modesty.

Or is my fault that, despite the straitness

Of my circumstances, I show you a wealthy man's face?

You know that I go out at evening and morning

With a hand empty of gifts from anyone but you.

Where is my closeness to you, for which

The notables of my age envied my reaching you?

And the station in which the world imagined

    I was the envoy al-Umari?

And my place beside you, beneath whose summit

Even the eagle's flight falls low?

And my coming to those pools, beside which

Every river is abandoned in disdain?

It is as though the life I had with

You were carried away by a falcon's flight feathers.

Do you think I discarded my covenant, or clothed

The faith of my affection one day in unbelief?

Or did you discover that my declared sincerity

And affection do not match my inward thoughts?

Or did someone come to you and relate that I

Suddenly intruded upon a woman in seclusion?

Or did a dream show you that I was drunk,

So you avoided me for my apparent drunkenness?

Or did I neglect prayer, failing to perform the dawn prayer

And caring nothing for the obligatory noon prayer?

Or did I greet my month of fasting by breaking

The fast, and disregard the month's importance?

None of this have I committed—or have the days,

Perhaps, disclosed the rising price of things?

Do not leave me to the people of an age

Whose inclination toward stinginess you know,

So that, seeking your help against the days

Of my life, I become like one seeking help from Amr.

Keep me here—or do not: the earliest I return,

If separation carries me far away, will be after ten.

And unwillingly I behold you, whenever

Nearness fails, in the faces of travelers.

Then, after guarding my dignity, something befell me

Harder to endure than swallowing bitter aloe:

Abundance in begging is constriction, and ease

In it is hardship, and gain is the very root of loss.

In it, hunger is surely better than fullness,

    And nakedness nobler than clothing:

A plight in which the brave man, accustomed to charging, prefers,

When it encompasses him, to take flight.

My taking this path of reproach

And stretching out the tongue of audacity

Is a course which, had I possessed my choice in it,

I would never have undertaken throughout my life.

The days forced me onto its rugged road—

Days that impose the traversing of rough paths upon a man.

You are one in whom there is no room for directing

Blame, nor for a detractor's disparagement.

By my life, I have confirmed the words of the one who named

You, and lengthened the tongue of the eulogist.

If anyone other than you among the people is called noble,

    It is merely idle talk.

I see none among your contemporaries who runs

Toward a goal toward which you run.

They are no precious pearls, but you

Among them are the centerpiece of a pearl necklace.

Through hospitality and teaching recitation you prevailed, and became—

May God preserve you—one who hosts and teaches.

The fame of one favored by prosperity has not traveled

While he remains at home; yet your fame travels.

You are like the full moon in its station on the horizon,

Clothing every region with its light.

People have lost their desire for perfection; were it sold

To them, they would not buy it for a fingernail.

So hear it: if they recited it to a deaf man,

It would spare his two ears the burden of deafness.

From the clarity of its meanings, the blackness

Of its ink almost turns white, and likewise from its words.

It is sweet: the honey of bees, blended,

    After being purified, with the water of apology;

A pearl enclosed and brought forth,

    Beyond all price, by the shells of thought;

And a virgin bride: when the suitor bids for her,

The high dowry does not deter him.

So deflower her: the best gift the days bestow,

In my view, is taking a virgin's maidenhead.
