ياOh! هَلْwill ...? تُصِيخونَyou listen attentively ليto me يَوْماًone day فأُسمِعُكُمْso I may let you hear
ماwhat يُسْخِنُmakes hot العَينَthe eye مِنْfrom هَمٍّsorrow وتَبرِيحِand anguish
Oh, will you listen to me one day, so I may tell you
Oh will you ever listen to me one day, so I can let you hear
what makes the eye burn with sorrow and anguish?
What makes the eyes burn with sorrow and yearning
ولاand not أُطيلُI speak at length فَشرحُfor explaining القَولِthe speech مُمْتَنِعٌis impossible
إذْsince لاnot يؤدِّيهِconveys it صَدْرٌa heart غَيرُnot مَشْرُوحِopened
Nor will I speak at length, for unfolding my words is impossible,
And I won't prolong, explaining is hard
since a heart not opened cannot give them voice.
For no chest can do it except an open one
لِيI have بَعْدَكُمْin your absence زَفْرَةٌa sigh لوif يَسْتضيءُseeks light بِهَاfrom it
سَارٍa night traveler لأغنَتْهُit would spare him عنfrom needing ضَوْءِthe light of المَصَابِيحِthe lamps
In your absence I have a sigh that, were its light sought by
After you I have a sigh, if it were lit
a night traveler, would spare him the light of lamps.
It would suffice a wanderer instead of lamps' light
وأدْمُعٍand tears إنif جَرَتْthey flow حُمْراًred فَلاَthen no عَجَبٌwonder
فَقَدْfor indeed مَرَرْتُI have passed بأجْفَانٍthrough eyelids مَجَارِيحِwounded
And tears—if they flow red, it is no wonder,
And tears, if they streamed red, no wonder
for I have passed through wounded eyelids.
For I have passed by weeping eyelids
فَهَلْso will ...? يُبَلُّbe quenched إذَاwhen اسْتَسْقَىhe seeks water لِقاءَكُمُa meeting with you
غَليلُthe burning thirst of ظَامٍa thirsty one دُوَينَjust short of الوِرْدِthe watering place مَطْرُوحِcast down
So will it be quenched, when he seeks a meeting with you as water—
Can a thirsty shadow be sated, when it asks to see you
the burning thirst of one parched, cast down just short of the watering place?
The thirst of a wilted flower flung on the ground
لَفَقْرُindeed, the need of إنْسَانthe pupil of عيْنيهِhis two eyes لرُؤيَتِكُمْto see you
علَىin النَّوىseparation فقرُthe need of جُثْمَانٍa body إلىfor رُوحِa soul
Indeed, the need of his eyes' pupils to see you
For a man's poverty is his eyes longing to see you
in separation is a body's need for a soul.
Like the poverty of a body to its soul
وهَلْand might ...? إذَاwhen عَزَّis hard to attain قُربٌcloseness أنto يَزُورَكُمُvisit you
عَنِّيon my behalf لِفَرطِbecause of the intensity of اشْتيَاقِيmy longing نَاسِمُthe breath of الرِّيحِthe wind
And, when closeness is hard to attain, might you be visited
And if nearness becomes difficult to visit you
on my behalf, because I long so intensely, by the wind's breath?
Far away from you, almost carried off by the breeze
فَشَاعَكُمso may it accompany you حَيثُwhere ماever كُنتُمْyou are سَلاَمُthe greeting of شَجٍone grief-stricken
حَيٍّalive يَحدُّhe sharpens حُسَامَthe sword of البُعْدِseparation مَذْبُوحِslaughtered
So may a greeting accompany you wherever you are, from one grief-stricken—
So my greetings to you wherever you are, greetings of one
alive, sharpening the sword of separation, yet slaughtered.
Alive, whose sword of separation is unsheathed
