ياO مَنْyou who يَبُلُّslakes بِمَاwith what يَقُولُhe says أُوامِيmy burning thirst
ويَبُوخُand quenches نَارَthe fire صَبَابَتِيmy ardent longing وغَرَامِيand my passion
O you whose words slake my burning thirst,
O you who is afflicted by what I say, my sorrows,
And quench the fire of my longing and passion,
And quenches the fire of my youth and passion,
أحْييتَyou revived حِينَwhen بَعَثْتَyou sent لِيto me بتَحيةٍwith a greeting
وسَلِمْتَand may you be safe إذْwhen أرْسلتَyou sent ليto me بسَلامِwith peace
You revived me when you sent me a greeting,
You brought me to life when you sent me a greeting,
And may you be safe, for you sent me peace,
And greeted when you sent me a salutation,
منfrom بَعدمَاafter وقَفتْstood علَىupon طَرَفِthe brink الرَّدَىdeath
نَفْسيmy soul وماand did not حَامَتْhover ورَاءَbeyond حِمَاميmy allotted death
After there had stood upon the brink of death
After my soul had stood at the edge of rejection
My soul, though it had not hovered beyond my allotted end.
And what it pined for behind its pigeons,
بَيتَانtwo verses كَانَاwere مِنكَfrom you جَاءَاcame نِعْمَةًa blessing
رَجَحَتْoutweighed بِماagainst what عِندِيI possess منof الأنْعَامِthe livestock
Two verses from you came as a blessing,
Two verses came from you as a blessing,
Outweighing the livestock I possess.
Outweighing what bounties I have,
إنِّيindeed I لأَرْجُوsurely hope أنَّthat هَذِيthis قَطْرةٌa drop
جَاءَتْcame مُقَدِّمةَa harbinger of الغَمَامِthe raincloud الهَامِيpouring rain
Indeed, I hope that this is a drop
I do hope that this is a drop,
That came to herald the pouring raincloud.
That came foretelling the gathering clouds,
فالنَّارُfor the fire يُلقِيهاcasts it الزِّنَادُthe fire-striker شَرَارَةًas a spark
وتَكُونُand becomes فِيمَاin what بعدcomes afterward ذَاتpossessed of ضَرَامِblazing flame
For the fire-striker sends forth fire as a spark,
Fire is sparked by the flint a spark,
And afterward it becomes a blazing flame.
To become thereafter of glowing embers,
إنَّindeed الهِلاَلَthe crescent moon تَرَاهُyou see it أصغَرَsmallest ماthat which يُرَىis seen
جُرْماًin size ويَبْدُوand appears بعدُafterward بَدْرَa full moon تَمَامِfullness
Indeed, you see the crescent as small as can be seen
The crescent you see is the smallest in size,
In size, and later it appears a perfectly full moon.
In mass, and appears later a full moon,
ولَرُبَّمَاand often أَخْذَاكَabashed you طَيِّبsweet نَشْرِهِits fragrance
زَهْرُthe bloom الحدَائِقِof the gardens وهوَwhile it is فيin الأكْمَامِthe calyxes
And often, sweet of scent, it has abashed you—
And perhaps the good scent of its bloom would seize you,
The gardens' bloom, while still enclosed in its calyxes.
The flowers of the gardens while still in buds,
إنْif طَالَrose above others بالآبَاءِthrough forefathers غَيرُكَsomeone other than you إنَّنِيindeed I
بِكَthrough you ماhow أطولُI tower مفاخِراًboasting وأُسَامِيand I vie for eminence
If another rises through his forefathers, as for me—
If the fathers before you were long-lived, I swear
Through you, how I tower in pride and vie for eminence!
With you I have no end to glories and highnesses,
لازِلْتَmay you ever remain مَكْلوءاًguarded علَىdespite مَنآكَyour distance عَنْfrom

May you ever remain guarded, despite your distance from
You remain laden over your resting place from,
My eye, by the eye of the One, the All-Knowing.
My eye by the eye of the All-Knowing Omniscient
