O you whom the lands have borne far away, so that you have become
O you who have come to these lands and made them
Dwellers in our hearts despite separation.
Your home, though you were once strangers

If titles bring honor to those named,
Honor, you have indeed ennobled the titles.
You have honored titles themselves

You departed, so I made grief’s zaqqum
You left, making the bitterness of parting
My provisions, and the foul fluid of tears my drink.
Provision, and tears your drink

Is everyone who parts like this, or has there never been
Is this how every lover parts, or was there
Before me a lover who parted from loved ones?
None before me who loved then left their beloved?

Cut to pieces since you left

And my regret, that the morn after we parted
I did not fulfill my wishes in bidding you farewell.
I could not bid you a long farewell

I marvel indeed at separation’s recurring visits—
Strange, that my soul still turns
To me, away from your dwelling, as I come and go.
Back to your lands, coming and going

I'd not tasted the sweetness of nearness, but it
By impending parting and distance into torment.
Foretold the pain of absence and separation

Separation has drawn a sword between us;
Parting's sword has torn us apart
Will reunion not provide it with a sheath?
Will we not be allowed to reunite?

Oh, do you foresee, for an exile hurled
O people, do you not see a traveler cast off
By the hands of distance, a return to Jidd Hafs?
By separation's hands to barren sands?

If Alexander's realm became iron melting
An iron jar with that heat, he would have melted it.
In its seas, it would melt away

I have settled in any home or among any companions.
I've settled, found home or friends

للضمر مما أهديت هدّابا
Now, by a she-camel whose girths slip—you would think her,
As for the curl-tressed girls, imagining them
From leanness, a fringe among the gifts bestowed.
For solace is naught but fancy's babble
