ياO مَنْyou who نَأَىwent afar فجَعَلتُso I began بعدَafter فِرَاقِهِparting from him
أسِمُI mark الوُجُوهَthe faces بِنَظرةِwith the gaze of المُتَبدِّلِone seeking a substitute
O you who went afar, after parting from you I began
O you who left, and after you went away
To mark faces with the gaze of one seeking a substitute.
I called all faces by the look of the fickle one,
فارْتَدَّso it returned سَرْحُthe herd اللَّحظِthe gaze أَعجَفَgaunt سَائِماًgrazing
إذْsince كَانَwas مرتَعُهُits pasture بِوَادٍin a valley مُمْحِلِbarren
So the grazing herd of my gaze returned gaunt,
So the gaze strayed, going back weakened and tired
For its pasture lay in a barren valley.
When its pasture was in a barren valley.
ماnot أنْemphatic particle وجَدْتُI found لِقُرْبِin the nearness of غَيرِكَsomeone other than you لَذَّةًpleasure
إلاّexcept that وكُنتَand you were عَلَىdespite البِعَادِthe distance ألذّsweeter لِيto me
Never did I find pleasure in another's nearness
I found no pleasure in the nearness of others
But you, though far away, were sweeter to me.
Except that you, from afar, were sweeter to me.
سَأقُولُI shall say والأمْثَالُand proverbs يُرْسِلُهاhe utters them الفَتَىthe young man
فِيمَاin whatever يَشَاءُhe wishes مَقَالةَthe words of المُتَمثِّلِone quoting a proverb
I shall say—and a young man utters proverbs
I will say, and the youth sends out such proverbs,
As he wishes—the words of one quoting a proverb:
Whatever he wishes, the words of the reciter.
نَقِّلْmove فُؤَادَكَyour heart حَيثُwherever شِئْتَyou wish فإنَّهُfor indeed it is
ماnot الحُبُّlove إلاَّexcept للحَبِيبِfor the beloved الأوَّلِthe first
Move your heart wherever you wish, for indeed
Move your heart wherever you wish, for love
Love is only for the first beloved.
Is only for the first beloved.
كَمْhow many مَنْزِلٍa dwelling فيin الأَرْضِthe earth يأْلفُهُhe grows fond of it الفَتَىthe young man
وحَنينُهُand his longing أبَداًalways لأوَّلِfor the first مَنْزلِdwelling
How many a home on earth a young man grows fond of,
How many dwellings on earth are loved by the youth,
Yet his longing is always for his first home.
Yet his longing is always for the first dwelling.
