ياO فَتْحَdeliverance of مَنْone whose أُغْلِقَتْwere shut أبْوَابُthe doors of مَطْلَبِهِhis petition
فيin وَجْهِهِhis face وغِنَىand wealth of القَومِthe people المفَاليسِthe penniless
O deliverance of one whose doors of petition were shut
O opener of doors for those whose hopes were locked,
in his face, and wealth of the penniless!
While the insolvent were in dire straits,
لَوْif سُمْتَنَيyou charged me with حَصْرَenumerating ماwhat أُولِيتَyou were granted مِنْof نِعَمٍblessings
كُتْباًin books لَضَاقَwould surely be too narrow بِهَاfor them بَاعُthe span of القَرَاطِيسِthe sheets of paper
If you charged me to enumerate the blessings bestowed upon you
If you listed the blessings you have bestowed on me,
in books, the span of paper would be too narrow to contain them.
The books would overflow the stationers' shelves.
بَيْنَاكَwhile you بالأمْسِyesterday تُعْلِينيyou raise me ذُرَاthe summits of رُتَبٍranks
شُمٍّlofty تَهُشُّyearn لَهَاfor them أَقْدَامُthe feet of إدْرِيسِIdris
While yesterday you raised me to the summits of ranks
Yesterday you raised me to lofty ranks,
so lofty that the feet of Idris yearn for them,
A height for which Idris' feet yearn,
أوْلَيتنِيyou bestowed upon me اليَومَtoday آلاَءًfavors خَرَجْتُI went forth بِهَاwith them
أَجُرُّI trail ذَيليmy hem فيin خُضْرِgreen المَلاَبيسِgarments
today you bestowed favors on me, and with them I went forth,
Today you have granted me such noble gifts,
trailing my hem in green garments.
That I trail my robe through verdant gardens.
فَلَوْso if رآنِيَhe saw me أدْرَىthe most knowledgeable النَّاسِof people بِيabout me لقَضَىhe would surely judge
عَلَيَّconcerning me إنِّيthat I am مِنْamong بَعضِsome of الطَّواويسِthe peacocks
So if the person who knew me best saw me, he would judge
If the wisest man who knew me saw me now,
me to be one of the peacocks.
He would decree I'm just another peacock.
