O Abu Hashim, as for the description you gave
of her yesterday—and circumstances will change—

وقد يستَصِحُّ الجسمُ وهو عَليلُ
I have discovered things about her that arouse my suspicion;
a body may seem healthy while it is ailing.

بواطِنَ طَرْفي دونَهُنَّ كَليلُ
Signs whose outward appearances led me to
hidden things beyond the reach of my dim gaze.

إذا الفكرُ في الأمرِ المُريبِ دليلُ
A surprise that thought had not scouted out for me,
though thought is a guide in matters that arouse suspicion.

Indeed, were it not for what a young man owes
his friend, and for truthfulness whenever he speaks,

you would have found me ignorant of that;
for one ignorant of it is better than one who knows.

For my heart, if I speak of what
I saw, is brave, but my tongue is cowed.

Nor do I pry into people's secrets,
nor am I inquisitive about the affairs of humankind.
