I passed through Karbala, and my grief was stirred:
I passed Karbala and my inner being was stirred,
The killing grounds of radiant, noble youths,
The graves of noble youths, honorable protectors without blame.

Protectors whose guest was never wronged,
Graves from which tears flow,
Noble men free of every fault.
Like the flowing of fragrance on meadows.

Graves from which tears trickle,
I stood by them to atone for my sins,
As perfume dripped upon the hillocks.
The scent of musk sealed shut.

I stood there to kiss, from its soil,
And in my hands, pressed against my chest,
The fragrance of musk with its seal broken.
Were flowers more eloquent than any words.

Were wounds my words cannot do justice to.
Like pearls streaming from a necklace.

I asked one of its dwellers,
Like pearls slipping free, drawn from their string.

And he made me envision al-Husayn there lonely,
Lords of glory and of lofty tombs.
So I yearned for the forsaken one wronged.

Defending his truth alone,
At al-Taff that morning to the vast army.

While the fire of war was kindled into a blaze.

Immense favors upon those seeking bounty.
To reside in the ribs and the skulls.

His honor intact with his defender.
