Can an eyelid you have kept awake find sleep?

Or can tears you have set flowing ever cease?

Is it fair that I spend the night upon the embers,

burning with love for you, while you sleep?

And I swallow choking grief, while you are at the water,

drinking as the thirsty would desire?

I see no judge more faithless than love,

even when its witnesses are certified upright.

    دٌ ولم يودُّ قلبُهُ المودُودُ

    No man has loved and found love or affection in return;

nor has the beloved loved his heart.

And on the slope of Zarud—may the rain

water Zarud for those Zarud shelters—

are neighbors: if life's wellspring has run clear

for them since we parted, and the drinking is sweet,

    وشَقَاءٌ بمنْ نُحِبُّ سُعُودُ

    while we suffer through loving them, may they enjoy it;

and suffering for those we love is good fortune.

My life be the ransom of those gazelles

with whom the wastes surprised us yesterday.

They crossed our path, and we knew not: were we at peace,

or had armies clashed with armies?

One pierced, never recovering; another a captive,

not ransomed from his bondage; another slain.

A cloud whose lightning-flashes withdrew from

souls that faced it, now lifeless.

Faces: the forbearing man, when he sees them,

is no longer forbearing, nor the wise man wise.

Each was granted such a share of beauty

that one seeking more could find no more to add.

    واستوتْ قَامَةٌ وأَتلَعَ جِيدُ

    A forelock darkened, and a face shone forth;

a figure stood straight, and a neck rose slender.

Then she appeared: were people to worship a face,

none but hers would be worshipped.

    Safety, safety from glances

against whose might no iron can shield us!

Their havoc among us is a wonder, with no arms

but saffron-dyed robes and striped cloaks,

or eyes that gaze as gazelles do,

and figures that bend as branches do.

Friend, why do the fair beauties turn from the white hairs

that lie upon my two cheeks?

Do the fair ones shun their radiance—or is

    aversion born of their rejection?

    ضٌ وحُكْمٌ مُسْتَهجَنٌ مَرْدُودُ

    A way astray from the right course, to be rejected;

and a distasteful judgment, to be refused.

Ah, may youth and its nights be cherished for me,

and its days, by the supple, graceful ones!

What difference is there between the two whitenesses,

that this should be loathed and that beloved?

When my share of joy was full,

my drink clear, and my life easy.

And may gray hair be cast to ruin and sheltered

somewhere far away in the land.

Who will defend me against new-risen hairs that show you life

as threadbare, through their own new attire?

Whenever you drive them off, they return, as returns

a driven-off herd to drink at the pools.

    Though their forms appear slight

to our eyes, their might is fierce.

I see no bargain more ruinous for a man—

and fate runs its course against our wishes—

than the onrush of gray hair, which is ugly,

and the departure of youth, which is lovely.

How welcome is the old blackness, and how unwelcome

this whiteness, though it is new!

Whiteness is not like blackness: the hands

of that one are white, while this one's hands are black.

Indeed, one at whose temples no gray is seen,

even if he dies before it comes, is truly fortunate.

O slaves of this world, slow down: your share

of what it gives you is scant.

And have shame before your Lord: how often the Master

pardons, and how often the servants do wrong!

And beware a place where tongues are silenced:

there, even the eloquent is tongue-tied.

And ransom these souls from the Fire,

for none can endure its torment.

Woe to you! Its heat leaves rock

as ashes—what, then, can skins say?
