Hand of Death, what a generous man you have struck down!

And returned victorious—with what a prize!

You felled the forest's lion among his cubs,

and returned unharmed from the lions.

You quenched the blazing star's radiance from

its horizons, and toppled the assembly's mountain.

And you curbed the impetuosity of a colt that so often

outstripped the steeds on every day of mounted combat.

On the seventeenth of Safar, there befell

mankind, through you, a blow that shatters livers.

A calamity beside which every calamity dwindled,

so that, like its victim, it had no equal.

A calamity that gave each heart a burning anguish

that parts to reveal the blazing embers of ghada wood.

And banished sleep from eyes, so they were given

bitter sleeplessness in place of sweet repose.

O catastrophe that filled the breasts of the wise

with grief that crushes the loftiest mountains!

You flooded the weepers' eyelids with tears,

and drained the waters of the foaming sea.

As though you thought their tears too scant for

this calamity, and so came with reinforcements.

God is greatest! What a towering mountain

has had its sides give way—and what a pillar!

What a man, so hard to lead, was led away

by Time, for whom the unruly is as the tame!

While he hunted virtues, never slackening

in stalking those close at hand and those that fled,

    فاعْجَبْ مِن المُصْطَادِ للمُصْطَادِ

    Death cast its snares and caught him;

so marvel at the hunter of the hunter!

    إنَّ الزَّمانَ بهِ لَغَيْرُ جَوَادِ

    Time gave him freely, then returned to take him;

truly, Time is anything but generous with him.

Never could the world have borne him a brother!

How could it, having grown barren of childbirth?

Through him the days grew gentle, then changed

    after him, becoming harsh indeed.

The three white nights turned, after him,

black, knowing nothing but driving me away.

    فالوِرْدُ مُعْتَلٌّ على الوُرَّادِ

    The sources of every good ran dry after him;

so access to water is hindered for those who come to drink.

Tell the driver of the pale camels, who hastened their pace

and steered them toward each desired goal:

Indeed, the spacious precinct has narrowed; withered is the

lush pasture, and the valley's torrent has run dry.

Death's hand has clutched him; and had it

accepted ransom, I would have been the first to ransom him.

Pardon me: had his assailant been anything but Death,

I swear I would have been the first to assail him,

among young men whose resolve guaranteed them

the quenching of their spears on every day of combat.

With their hands they outreached the tips of their brown spears,

and with those hands needed no swaying lances.

Men whose cutting swords, whenever drawn, are sheathed

where a crown rests or a sword-belt hangs.

And when they level their spears, there lodge

their points in the hiding-places of hatred.

They race one another on swift steeds toward battle,

as those steeds race with them toward the finish lines.

Do you know whom they carried on their wooden bier?

Glory itself they carried upon the bier.

By my life, they bore to the abode of decay

a lofty mountain and a guiding star of night,

and an Indian blade whose keenness wore out its sheaths,

so that earth became one of its sheaths.

Had his grave known his true worth,

it would have split and caved in for him, like my heart.

O distant one, whose dwelling lies so near

to us, yet who has been taken to the utmost distance!

Will you not—may my father ransom you—grant a return,

and moisten hearts that thirst for you?

Or, if not, a promise of return; for that

suffices, since you are true to your promise.

O rider, a mount folds the desert's expanses beneath you,

as merchants fold their precious striped cloaks:

a lean she-camel, whose saddle-frames seem fastened upon

a white wild bull pursued by attacking beasts of prey.

If you reach the city of Yathrib,

convey greetings there to the guiding Prophet,

and tell him that calamities have bereaved him,

with arrows from their bow, of his dearest offspring.

O his grave, may a cloud with rain-laden depths greet you,

rich in lightning flashes, roaring with thunder!

The south wind draws its farthest reaches toward the grave, like the

herdsman calling to the straying camel-herds.

And the east wind keeps milking it, as though it

pours in streams through the holes of waterskins.

Though Abd al-Ra'uf has gone his way—

and Death lies in wait for the living—

yet he has established for us a guiding imam,

who follows him in sending forth and bringing in.

The seat of justice glories in him, as though he were

a full moon from which the darkness of early night has parted.

May the seat of judgment never cease to see through him—

the eye of Time, the one beyond all peers.
