صَاحِO friend ماnot وَجْديmy yearning بسُكَّانِfor the dwellers of المَحلِّthe abode
بالذيof the kind that تَحْوِيْهِcontains it أرْقَامُthe inscriptions of السِّجِلِّthe scroll
O friend, my yearning for the dwellers of the abode
is not something the writing of a scroll can hold.
فَأَرِحْso give rest to جَاريَةَthe running الأَقْلامِpens منْfrom

So give the coursing pens rest from
tasks that weary whoever rushes to attempt them.
غَيرَexcept أنِّيthat I أَبْعَثُsend الرِّيحَthe wind لَهُمْto them
بِسَلامٍwith a greeting إنْif تَعِدْهُyou repeat it لاnot يَمَلِّgrows tiresome
Yet I send the wind to them
with a greeting that never grows tiresome, however often repeated:
عَبِقٌfragrant يَنْفضُّscatters رَيَّاهُits sweet scent عَلَىover
كُلِّevery حَزْنٍrugged tract يَتَخطَّاهُit passes over it وسَهْلِand plain
fragrant, its perfume scatters over
every rugged tract it crosses, and every plain;

خَاطِرٍa mind ملآنَbrimming مِنْwith ذَاكَthat ويُمْلِيand dictates
and speech that takes down longing from
a mind brimming with it, and dictates in turn.
ياO نُزُولاًdwellers بَينَamong أجْرَاعِthe sandy tracts of الحِمَىthe sanctuary
وفُؤَادِيand my heart حَيْثُمَاwherever حَلُّواthey settle يَحلِّsettles
O dwellers among the sanctuary's sandy tracts,
my heart settles wherever they settle.
وأبَىby the father of العُشَّاقُlovers لَوْلاwere it not for حَسَدِيmy envy
كَلَّeveryone مَنْwho يأتِيكُمُbrings you بالكُتْبِwith letters قَبْلِيbefore me
By the father of lovers, were it not for my envying
everyone who brings you letters before me,
لَغَدَاwould become أكْثَرُmost ماof what فيin الأَرْضِthe earth مِنْof
وَرَقٍpaper كُتْبيmy letters لَكُمْto you والخَلْقُand all people رُسْلِيmy messengers
then most of the world's
paper would be my letters to you, and all mankind my messengers.
ياAh شَوَىthe burning of قَلْبيmy heart علىat البُعْدِseparation فَهَلْso is there
مِنْany لِقاًmeeting يُعدِيgives help علَىagainst ذَاكَthat وَوصْليand my reunion
Ah, my heart's burning at separation! Is there
a meeting to remedy that, and reunion for me?
وغَزَانِيand assailed me عَسْكَرُthe army of الشَّوْقِlonging فَلَمْand did not
يَكُbe عنin return for شَيءٍanything سِوَىexcept قَلْبيmy heart يَحِلِّwithdraw
The army of longing assailed me, and
would withdraw for nothing but my heart.
إنَّindeed مَنْone whom أَمْطَرَهُshowered him with البُعْدُseparation وَبَالاًcalamity
أفَلاthen will ... not? يُنْعشُهُrevive him القُربُnearness بِوَبْلِwith a downpour
Surely, one on whom separation has rained calamity—
will nearness not revive him with a downpour?
كُلَّمّاwhenever أعْطَشَنِيmakes me thirst اليأسُdespair بِهَيْهَاwith 'how far...'
تَcompletes 'how far!' مِنfrom الوَصْلِunion تَعلَّلتُI consoled myself بِعَلِّwith 'perhaps'
Whenever despair parches me with 'How far
from reunion!' I console myself with 'perhaps.'
كُنْتُI used to be والأرْضُand the earth إذَاwhen صَافَحَهاshook hands with it
قَدَمِيmy foot أُثْقِلَهاI weighed heavily on it أَعْظَمَthe greatest ثِقْلِweight
Once, whenever the earth felt the handshake
of my foot, I weighed upon it most heavily.
أَصْبَحَتْhas become أثقَلَheavier مِنِّيthan me نَمْلَةٌan ant
فَزِنُواso weigh بِيagainst me بَعْضَهاpart of it يَرْجَحْit will outweigh بِكُلِّيall of me
Now an ant has become heavier than I;
weigh part of one against me: it will outweigh all of me.
ثُمَّmoreover لوif قَدindeed حَمَلَتْنِيcarried me بَقَّةٌa gnat
مُدَّةَthroughout الأيَّامِthe days لَمْdid not تَعيَgrow weary بِحَمْلِيof carrying me
Moreover, if a gnat were to carry me
for all time, it would not tire of carrying me.
فَإنِso if اسْتَحلَلْتُمُyou deem lawful قَتْليkilling me فأَنتُمْthen you
أَبداًforever فيin سَعَةٍfreedom مِنهُregarding it وحِلِّand absolution
So if you deem my killing lawful, you are
forever free to do so, and absolved,
غَيرُnot مَنْشودِينَcalled to account عَنْfor ذَاكَthat فإنْfor if
يَقتُلِkill العَبدُthe slave مُوَاليهِhis masters يُطلِّgoes unavenged
not called to account for that; for if
a slave is killed by his masters, his blood goes unavenged.
واسْتَشفَّتْنِيand has worn me transparent يَدُthe hand of الشُّوقِlonging فَلَوْso if
قُمْتُI stood فيin الشَّمْسِthe sun لَمَاwould not أبْصَرتُI saw ظِلِّيmy shadow
The hand of longing has worn me transparent; if
I stood in the sun, I would not see my shadow.
أَيْنَwhere منsomeone who يُسْلفُنِيwill lend me دَمْعاًtears فَقَدْfor indeed
غَاضَhas dried up ماwhat أبْكِيI weep بِهِwith it غَيْرَexcept الأَقَّلِthe smallest remnant
Where is someone to lend me tears? For
what I weep with has dried up, save the smallest remnant.
وجَرَىand flowed ذَاكَthat دَماًas blood فاحْتَاجَso it needed مِنْfrom
سَاكبِthe shedder of الدَّمْعِtears لِتَطهيرٍfor purification وغُسْلِand washing
And that flowed as blood, demanding of
the shedder of tears purification and washing.
ياO نَسِيماًbreeze هَبَّblew منfrom نحوِهِمُtheir direction
هَاتِbring news باللَّهِby God عنof الحَيِّthe encampment فَقُلْso tell لِيme
O breeze that blew from their direction,
bring news, by God, of the encampment, and tell me:
أَعَلَىare ... true to? العَهْدِthe pledge هُمُthey أمor ضَيَّعُواthey neglected
مَاwhat لَنَاbelongs to us منof ذِمَّةٍcovenant فِيهِمْwith them وإلِّand bond
Are they true to the pledge, or have they neglected
the covenant and bonds that bind them to us?
أَنْضَجُواthey roasted أكْبَادَنَاour livers حَرّاًwith heat وهُمْwhile they
وهَنَاهُمْand may it delight them ذَاكَthat فيin بَرْدٍcoolness وظِلِّand shade
They have roasted our livers with heat, while they—
may that bring them joy!—are in coolness and shade.
ليتَهُمْwould that they إِذْwhen ملَكُونَاpossessed us كُلَّنَاall of us
مَلَّكُوناgranted us عنهُمُabout them بعضَsome التَّسَلِّيforgetting
Would that, when they possessed us wholly,
they had given us some power to forget them.
كَيفَhow نَسْلُوcan we forget والتَّسَلِّيwhile forgetting عَنْهُمُabout them
كِلْفَةٌa strained effort تُحدَثُis acquired والوَجْدُwhile yearning جِبِلِّيis innate
How can we forget, when forgetting them
is a contrived effort, while yearning is inborn?
ماnot تَسلَّينَاwe sought solace بِشَيءٍin anything حَسَنٍlovely
عَنْfrom هَوَاهُمْour love for them فَرأينَاand we found ذَاكَthat يُسْليit consoles
Never have we sought solace in anything lovely
to forget our love for them and found it soothing.
ماwhat burden علَىupon المُثْريone rich منin الصَّبْرِpatience إذَاif
جَادَhe gives generously مِنْهُof it بِقَلِيلٍa little للمُقِلِّto one with little
What burden lies on one rich in patience, if
he gives a little of it to one who has little?
إنَّindeed شَخصاًa person أَشْخَصَتْهُhas driven him away عَنهُمُfrom them

نِيَّةٌan ambition تُفضِيleads لِعِزٍّto honor بعدafter ذُلِّabasement
Indeed, a man driven away from them
by an ambition leading to honor after abasement,
وتُؤَدِّيهِand brings him إلىto ماwhat يَشْتَهِيhe desires
منof شَرَابٍdrink وِفْقَaccording to ماwhat شَاءَhe wishes وأَكْلِand food
and bringing him whatever he desires
of drink, just as he wishes, and food—

(while I, compared with him, lie on couches of bliss,
taking first and second draughts of his hopes)—
وأَجازتْهُand let him pass السَّمواتُthe heavens عُلاًaloft
وصُعُوداًand ascent فَهْوَyet he فيin أسْفَلِthe lowest سُفْلِdepths
even if the heavens grant him passage aloft
and upward, he is in the lowest depths.
قُلْsay لسُكَّانِto the dwellers of الحِمَىthe sanctuary عنon behalf of نَازِحٍan exile

Tell the sanctuary's dwellers, on behalf of an exile
whom Time has flung to a far-off abode:
إنّif تَرَامَىhas carried far البُعْدُdistance بِيwith me عَنْكُمْfrom you فَلَمso did not

أَرَكُمْI see you إلاّexcept بِكُتْبٍthrough letters أوor بِرُسْلِthrough messengers
If distance has carried me far from you, so that I have not
seen you except through letters or messengers,

and has struck me—whenever I recover from
its arrows, longing brings a fresh relapse with arrows—

and the caravan has borne me away from you, while my heart
is with you and my body with the departing caravan,

yet surely you are before my eyes wherever
I may be, my scattered self gathered through you despite the distance.
