وأَغْرَبُ ما مَرَّ في مَسْمَعِي
وأَوقعَنيand cast me بَينَbetween غَيٍّerror ورُشْدِand right guidance
وأَوقعَني بَينَ غَيٍّ ورُشْدِ
And the strangest thing that ever reached my ears
The strangest thing to reach my ears,
And left me torn between error and right guidance
that tossed me between corruption and righteousness,
قِرَاءةُrecitation قَارٍa reciter دَعَاcalled إذْas تَلاَhe recited
قِرَاءةُ قَارٍ دَعَا إذْ تَلاَ
بِصَوْتٍwith a voice ومَعنَىand meaning لفسْقٍto debauchery وزُهْدِand asceticism
بِصَوْتٍ ومَعنَى لفسْقٍ وزُهْدِ
