Who will defend me against ill fortune that has struck me

with grievous calamities that have sapped my strength?

I befriend the noble, generous man among the people,

yet it recasts him in the garb of the base.

And whenever my right hand draws a sword

for combat, it buries my sword in me.

And whenever I send an arrow flying

to shoot game, it turns my arrows back upon me.

So were I to grant the newly forming rain clouds

my brotherly friendship, I would alter the nature of the clouds.

Or were I to seek light, the sun would not rise,

and humankind would remain in darkness.

Or were I to grant Death the purity of my affections,

not a single person would die by Death.
