Who will defend me against this faultfinding reprover,
My excuse, for this fickle turning away
who renews my passion with his repeated blame?
Makes my passion waver with blame and dismay
فَهَبْthen suppose أنَّthat هَذاthis اللومَblame مِنكَfrom you نصيحةٌis counsel

Grant, then, that this blame of yours is counsel;
Suppose this censure were advice from you
I would accept it, if my heart were in my hand.
I'd accept it if my heart were in my command

How gently the moist branch in its prime inclines
the measure of his form in freshness and graceful sway.

He offers a cheek for kissing, as gleaming as
And smiles, clearer than pearl, the slender one
the flat of an Indian sword polished by a burnisher's hands.

He smiles, revealing teeth purer than pearls; whoever drinks
Sated with the chill of life without relying
drinks something sweeter than rainwater, and cooler.

to oppose my love for him and my affection.

Watering the abodes' curves with a torrent
his glances between me and my composure.

Adorned with lights from the raiment of decay
by lightning-flashing rain, its showers near, thundering.

and restored to the one who searches there.

By my father's life—and merit is credited to its rightful possessors—
A man, if you say that those lines of piety
Muhammad's generosity has made al-Ta'i seem miserly.

A youth: if you say, “That is a station of eminence
He who hopes the rain in the barren hills one day
upon a star, or higher than the star,” he ascends.
Will relieve his hopes, once awakened, provide

And possessed of bounty—rain pooled on smooth rock
When you go to him seeking, you find pouring forth
never quenches thirst better than he does for thirsty hope.

The genealogists never darkened a page
wealth's riding-camels, just after bringing them to water.
With lineage whiter than his stock and creed

For genealogists have never blackened the face of a page
Tracing his lines to Ali and the best
with anyone whiter-faced in ancestry and lineage than he.
Of all messengers, Mohammed, of glorious deed

By my life, he volunteered kindness sincerely
Ali and the best of messengers, Muhammad.
Nothing like gifts from his ever-renewed hands

By my life, he has freely bestowed kindness,
I'm overwhelmed, thanking his patronage
and none of his renewed bounty was requested.
Repeating my praise to my patron without end

He kept it coming until I was unequal to thanking him,
Far different is one who rarely will grant
and I often told his emissary, “Enough!”
Or gives sparingly than one newly awake

How different a man whose bounty is requested
When custom lapses its taste is more sweet
and who begrudges it, from another who gives unasked!
To its seeker, its watering place more bright

People are only a miser after a promise,
Have you not seen the sun more beloved of men
or one who offers kindness without a promise.
Because it does not shine on them without end?

I say, after he has kept lavishing kindness on me,
Just so, if rain did not cease, the earth would complain
and its couriers have complained to me of their constant journeys:
To God of the deeds of that spoiler, that fiend
رُوَيداًgently فماfor not جَدّدتَyou renewed بَالِيْa worn-out صَنِيعةٍfavor

No wind's blow is binding upon the wind's course
if what you did before grows threadbare, then renew it.
By its driving wind where it's driven, impeded

When kindness comes at intervals, its taste becomes
More barren when its torrent is dammed and pent
more delicious to its seeker, and its watering place sweeter.
More turbid when loosed from its raging descent

Defiling when passing the meadows, unclean
to people because it does not remain over them forever?
Save to bow on knees bent down in worship

Likewise, if rain did not cease, the earth would complain
Greedy, as if the earth, though sated by him
to God about it, as about a destroyer's deeds.”
Still says when filled up by his watering, "Give!"

With greater downpour on days of free giving
though it drives it like a shackled captive—
When others damped down each hearth, doused each pyre

hoarse-voiced, overflowing when any of its torrent is checked,
Their hands make the flames like sparks from feet spurned
and foaming if its raging flood's first rush is held back;
In hot sand where the lost in bewildered throngs erred

persistent, when it passes over hills, never
Severed by them, all dear unions regret
ceasing until they are bowed and prostrate;
As souls wander grieving, seek ransom and plead

obstinate, as if the earth, when asking it to stop,
Gazelles, like reed-pipes, wandering herds once played
choked with its water, were telling it, “More!”—
Lost in the wilderness, vanishing without trace

Antelopes nourished as if by wine aged
when, as he gives, every fire-kindler puts out his fire.

I swear by their forelegs as they plunge through the wilderness,
For them, when the family broke its bridle's reins
like a scattered flock pursued by cries from behind:
The ostrich's lashes sped wandering far

noble she-camels, on which every far distance is crossed,
Pillars for God's house, with youths whose fair features
where souls go forth exhausted and seek to ransom themselves.
Were heavy with godliness, worship and creed

Open-handed, of noble and purified seed

A youth who surpassed the elders, though beardless
frightened by a tightly twisted rawhide thong.
Outdoing the graybeards in wisdom and wit

If not Mohammed, none is as Ali
despite weariness, the eyelids of ostriches driven onward.
Search as you may, none his equal, none near

Him with the fairest praise made eternal in verse

Eulogies beyond a poet's imagination
in generosity of soul joined to purity of birth.
Ormouths reciting the like have been heard

I am the guiding star, the banner with which
and outstripped the aged while still beardless.
The perplexed find direction and know they are led

If a descendant of Ali is not like Muhammad,
When I call the disobedient, he comes obedient
he is no true lord, if you examine him.
If another calls the obedient, he stays instead

with the sweet fragrance of praise that grants immortality:

Whenever I summon unruly verse, it comes obediently;
but if another summons obedient verse, it stays seated.
