They say the voice of the humiliated is faint,
They say the voice of the downtrodden is faint
They say the voice of the downtrodden is faint,
And the ears of earth's tyrants are deaf, stone-deaf.
And the hearing of the earth’s tyrants is deaf and dumb
And that the ears of earth's tyrants are deaf and stone,
وفيand in صيحَةِthe cry of الشَّعْبِthe people المُسَخَّرsubjugated زَعْزَعٌa violent gale
تَخُرُّfall لهاbefore it شُمُّlofty العُرُوسِthe supporting walls وتُهْدَمُand are demolished
And in the cry of the subjugated people is a tempest,
Yet in the cry of the toiling people there is turmoil
Yet within the cry of the enslaved lies a storm,
Before it, lofty walls fall and are demolished.
That makes the bride’s breath stagger and brings walls crashing down
Before which towering citadels crumble and fall,
ولَعْلَعَةُand the ringing cry of الحقّtruth الغَضوبِwrathful لهاit has صدًىan echo
ودَمْدَمَةُand the rumbling of الحربِwar الضَّروسِferocious لهاit has فمُa mouth
And wrathful truth's ringing cry has an echo,
The clamor of angry truth has an echo
The thunderous roar of angry Truth holds an echo,
And the rumbling of ferocious war has a mouth.
And the rumble of ferocious war has a mouth
And the savage growl of war finds a mouth to speak,

يُصَرِّمُcuts short أَحْداثَthe events of الزَّمانِtime ويُبْرِمُand settles them
When a people rally around truth, it
When people rally around the truth, it
If a people rally around the Right, then surely it
Cuts short the events of time and settles them.
Shakes the times and makes them grim
Shall sever the threads of fate and weave them anew,
لكَto you الوَيْلُwoe ياO صَرْحَedifice of المَظالمِinjustices مِنْfrom غَدٍtomorrow
إِذاwhen نَهَضَrise المُسْتَضْعفُونَthe downtrodden وصَمَّمواand stand resolute
Woe to you, O edifice of injustice, from tomorrow onward,
Woe to you, o bastion of oppression, tomorrow
Woe unto you, O citadel of injustice, from the morrow,
When the downtrodden rise and stand resolute,
When the oppressed rise up with resolve
When the oppressed rise up with steely resolve,
إِذاwhen حطَّمَshatter المُسْتَعبدونَthe enslaved قيودَهُمْtheir chains
وصبُّواand pour out حَميمَthe scalding water of السُّخْطِwrath أَيَّانَwhen تَعْلَمُyou will know
When the enslaved shatter their chains,
When the enslaved break their chains
When the enslaved shatter their heavy chains,
And pour out the scalding water of wrath—when will you know?
And pour the heat of their rage, when will you understand?
And pour their scalding wrath where you well know,
أَغرَّكَhas it deceived you? أنَّthat الشَّعْبَthe people مُغْضٍclosing their eyes علىover قَذًىgrit in the eye
وأنَّand that الفضاءَthe expanse الرَّحْبَvast وَسْنانُdrowsy مُظْلِمُdark
Has it deceived you that the people close their eyes over grit,
Does it fool you that the people bear their misery patiently
Were you deluded because the people suffer silently on grit,
And that the vast expanse is drowsy and dark?
And that the vast space is darkened and gloomy?
And that the vast horizon sleeps in darkness?
أَلاbehold إنَّindeed أَحلامَthe dreams of البلادِthe land دَفينةٌburied

Behold, the land's dreams lie buried,
Know that the dreams of the nation lie buried
Nay, the dreams of the land lie buried deep,
Murmuring in its depths whatever they murmur.
Simmering deep down with what they simmer
Murmuring within the depths their hidden words,
ولكنْbut سيأتيwill come بعدَafter لأيٍhardship نُشُورُهاtheir resurrection

But after hardship their resurrection will come,
But after a while they will be resurrected
Yet after long delay, their resurrection shall surely come,
And the day that sings will burst forth.
And the day will dawn when they are chanted
And the day of singing triumph shall burst forth,
هوَit الحقُّtruth يَغْفىslumbers ثمَّthen يَنْهَضُrises ساخِطاًin anger
فيَهْدُمُthen it demolishes مَاwhat شادَbuilt الظَّلامُdarkness ويَحْطِمُand shatters
It is truth: it slumbers, then rises in anger,
Truth slumbers then wakes raging
For Truth may slumber, but it rises in fury,
Then demolishes what darkness has built and shatters it.
Destroying what darkness built and crushing it
To demolish and destroy what darkness has built,
غَدَاtomorrow الرَّوْعُterror إنْif هبَّrises الضَّعيفُthe weak one ببأْسِهِwith his might

Tomorrow brings terror if the weak rise with their might;
Tomorrow, if the weak rouse themselves in fury
Terror awaits the morrow if the weak strike with their might,
You will know which of us the blood will sweep away,
We shall know who among us will be swept away in blood
You shall know which of us the torrent of blood will sweep away,

ومُزْدَرعُand the sower of الأَوجاعَsuffering لاno بدَّescape يَنْدَمُwill regret
To where his hand reaps the seed of his yesterday;
To where his hands reap what they sowed
To where his hand reaps the seeds of his yesterday,
And the sower of suffering must regret it.
And the sower of torment will surely regret
For he who sows agony must surely come to regret,
سَتَجْرَعُyou will gulp down أَوصابَthe afflictions of الحَيَاةِlife وتَنْتَشيand become intoxicated
فتُصْغيthen you will listen إلىto الحقِّtruth الَّذيthat يَتَكَلَّمُspeaks
You will gulp down life's afflictions and grow drunk,
You will drink the cups of life and find joy
You shall drain the bitter cup of life's maladies until you reel,
Then you will listen to truth as it speaks,
Listening to the truth being spoken
And hearken at last to the Truth that speaks,

When Time gives you a drink from its cup, whose
When life makes you drink from its cup
When Fate pours you a drink from its cup,
Dregs are bitter sap and colocynth.
Whose dregs are bitter and unpleasant
Whose dregs are bitter aloe and gall,
إِذاwhen صُعِقَis struck down الجبَّارُthe tyrant تَحْتَbeneath قُيُودِهِhis chains

When the tyrant is struck down beneath his chains,
When the tyrant is stunned beneath his chains
When the tyrant is struck down beneath his own chains,
He listens to life's sufferings and understands.
Shrieking from life’s agonies and understanding
He finally hears life's agonies and understands.
