O love, you are the secret of my affliction,

and my worries, my terror, and my toil,

and my wasting, my tears, and my torment,

and my sickness, my anguish, and my misery.

O love, you are the secret of my existence,

and my life, my dignity, and my defiance,

and my ray of light amid my lifetime's pitch-darkness,

and my companion, my solace, and my hope.

O pure wine of the heart, O poison of my soul

in my life, O my hardship, O my ease!

Are you a flame that rises in the soul's garden

and runs rampant, or are you the light of heaven?

O love, through you I have drunk sor-

row by the cupful, yet never captured what I sought.

So, by beauty's right, O lo-

ve, grant me your mercy, and ease my affliction.

    Would that I knew, O love—tell me:

were you created from darkness or from light?

O poetry, you are the mouth of feeling

and the cry of the sorrowful spirit.

O poetry, you are the echo of the sobbing of

the heart and the lovelorn stranger.

    O poetry, you are tears

clinging to the eyelashes of life.

    O poetry, you are blood

bursting from the wounds of beings.

    O poetry, my heart, as

you know, is wretched and dark.

Within it are gaping wounds, and dripping

    from their caverns is blood.

    Upon its lips have congealed

    the calamities of grim-faced life.

It is the wretched one, melted by

    the lament of miserable hearts.

Forever it laments in burning anguish

    among fallen hopes,

    like the singing nightingale

    among the withering flowers.

How often I have sprinkled for it, so that

it may find solace; how often I have consoled it.

But it refused, and did not listen to

my words; so I brought it no relief.

How often I said: Patience, O heart!

Will you not cease your sobbing?

    For when life steels itself,

the flames of the blaze disperse.

O heart, do not panic before

    the rigidity of crushing time.

For if you cry out in pain,

    the ages mock your cry.

O heart, do not rage against

the days, for the lovely flowers

listen to the uproar of storms

    before the melodies of spring.

O heart, do not content yourself with the thorns of

    despair amid the flowers.

For beyond the pains of life

lies the sweetness of bold hope.

O heart, do not pour your tears

into the open air, lest you regret it.

For upon the smiles of the open air lies

    the cruelty of a mocker.

    But my heart, while

its sides were drenched in tears,

    seethed with sorrows, as

    those fissures overflowed with them.

It weeps over the distant dream

    with anguish that never clears,

singing like the sweetest of calling birds

in the wilderness, and says to me:

    Cleanse your wounds with tears,

and let them take their course.

    Indeed, tears are never wasted,

the humble ones or the great.

    For some tears surge forth,

    sweeping away life's thorns,

hurling into the abyss of existence

    all that tyrants build.

    And some tears shine

    in the darkness like stars.

    And some tears relieve

the soul of the burden of cares.

So pity its misery, and lament

    with it over its dreams.

For the beautiful dream has indeed perished

upon the blaze of its pains.

O poetry, O revelation of existence

that lives, O language of angels,

sing, for my own days weep

to the rhythm of your reed flute.

Repeat within the hearing of darkness

    my heart's feeble moans,

and pour upon the eyelids of flowers

    my heart's bleeding tears.

For perhaps the heart of night

is more merciful to weeping hearts.

And perhaps the eyelid of the flower

    better preserves the flowing tears.

How often the hand of sorrow has plucked

    the strings of that longing,

and my heart's sorrows have streamed

    in songs of moaning.

How often I have poured out my tears

    until my eyelids grew ulcerated.

Then I turned, but found no

    heart to share my sorrows.

Perhaps the night will be more merciful,

    for it laments like me.

And perhaps the flowers will preserve my tears,

for they shed them like me.

The hand of evening has veiled

    death in dreadful silence,

so it has become like the depths of caves,

    without clamor or heartbeat.

It comes on wings of stillness,

as though it were the pitch-black night.

    But death's specter is cruel,

while darkness is a merciful apparition.

Why does death show no pity

    for lamenting life?

It is all the same: hearts that moan

    or hearts that sing.

    O poetry, was death created

    without feeling, like lifeless matter?

    No tremor overtakes its hands

    when the heart entreats it.

Have you seen the flowers of spring,

    with their petals already withered,

then crumbled onto the breast of the soil,

    with their longings already dead?

Have you seen the wilderness blackbird

    singing among the branches?

    Song froze within its breast

when it saw the specter of death.

Then it died, as they ebbed away—

    the pure songs of life—

    and fell from the branches

    among the grim-faced flowers.

Have you seen the child's mother weeping for

    that only child,

    when it was seized violently

by the mighty arm of death?

Have you heard the distraught lover's lament

    among the graves,

    weeping for his beloved? O,

    the slaughters of audacious death!

In the depths of existence overflowed

    the serenity of steadfast patience,

when it saw the justice of life

    embraced by the ungrateful grave.

Then it streamed forth as a melody repeated

within the hearing of the ages

by the voice of life, in a clamor

running along the lips of the seas.

O poetry, you are the song

    of the ocean's enchanting waves,

    radiant and smiling,

    dancing and pure,

    unveiled and singing,

    with life forever,

    like brides of laughing hope,

swaying as long as time endures.

    Behold, the flowers of spring—

    their calyxes have smiled.

They gaze toward the distant twilight,

    their dreams beguiling them.

In their breast is a hope

    staring toward those stars,

but it is a hope that will be buried

    by the tyrants of gloom.

So surely they will close their eyelids

to all the lights of life,

    where darkness settles

in the air of that slumber.

    Behold, they have whispered

their song into the ears of life.

The birds of morning have killed

    their singing and their song.

O poetry, you are the song

    of those smiling flowers.

O, would that I were like the flowers,

    without a gloom-stricken life.

    Life is sorrowful,

    immersed in its tears.

And grief has wearied the sun

in her waking and her sleep.

So she swallowed an overflowing cup

    of twilight's sparkling wine,

    then swayed drunkenly toward

the cave of life, and never awoke.

O poetry, you are her sobbing

when she sank into her slumber.

O poetry, you are her singing

in her death and her life.

Look at the twilight of the sky,

    overflowing from those mountains.

With its enchanting radiance, it bathes them

    in the smiles of beauty,

and stirs in the sorrowful soul

    a tempest that never stills,

    and kindles the tormented heart

into a flame that never dies.

O poetry, you are the beauty

of the enchanting lights of sunset,

    O whisper of evening's waves,

    smiling and bewildered,

O reed flute of my beloved dreams,

O companion of my ardent love,

without you, I would have died of my anguish,

and of my misery and melancholy.

In you my soul has enfolded itself, and into you

I have breathed all my feelings.

So sing upon the summits of life

of my anguish, O my bird.
