Live by feeling and for feeling, for

your world is but a universe of emotions and feeling.

It was built upon deep compassion, and indeed

it would dry up if built upon thought,

and remain lifeless in its beauty, forlorn,

    like a ruined, abandoned temple;

    and remain harsh-featured and grim,

    desolate as death, without joy.

Love would not dance upon it, singing

to people among streams and flowers,

    rosy-cheeked, with drunken steps,

swaying with merriment and overflowing delight,

crowned with roses, scattering for humankind

the petals of pleasure's fresh rose.

No indeed—nor would beautiful art appear

in the universe beneath a cloud of light,

draped in enchantment, blowing its flute,

aflame among leafy groves and a pool,

or touching the sacred lute, describing

to death, to the days, to the darkness,

what life holds of joy and sorrow,

    and enchantment, pleasures, and beguilement.

    Never—nor would winged hope sing

there in the voice of a joyful dreamer

    those songs that grant humankind

the resolve of youth and the sparrow's joy.

And make your feeling a guide through nature,

for it knows her enchanted wilderness.

It accompanied life in her youth and walked with her

    among skulls and spilled blood,

and ran with her over lofty peaks, smiling

and singing for ages and aeons.

And reason, despite its gray hair and dignity,

is still very young in the passage of days.

It walks; the winds bring it low, so it bends,

in pain, like a broken bird.

And it keeps questioning itself, philosophizing,

scrutinizing minutely, with frivolity and conceit,

about what the stars veil behind them

of the mystery of this hidden world.

And it is shattered by storms—oh, what

    a naive, conceited philosopher!

And open your heart to existence, and leave it

to the sea, to the waves, to the darkness,

to the snow the whirlwinds scatter, to sorrow,

to terror, to pain, to fate.

And let it plunge into the storms, wandering

    in their cloud-laden, cold horizon,

and wade through existence's entrails, venturing boldly

    in its fearful, dreaded night,

until life embraces it and it drinks its fill

    from her blazing, fiery mouth;

so you may live in the world with a brimming heart,

wakeful in its feelings, dreaming, enchanted,

    in a sacred Sufi ecstasy

that is the best this visible world contains.
