Indeed, the learned have fallen into a hypnotic sleep,

And have not heard what the worlds have echoed.

    Yet a shrill, rising voice

From the spirit, whose essence even one feigning deafness knows,

Will awaken every sleeper among them,

And make every silent, downcast one among them speak.

You fell silent, guardians of religion, with the silence of one in dismay,

And slept with eyelids fully closed, while the torrent swept upon you.

You fell silent, though you had discerned a darkness whose folds

Are signs and landmarks of rebellious unbelief.

Processions of atheism, behind your silence,

Clamor—and behold, the expanse is filled with sins.

Awake, for the night of sleep has spent its youth,

And signs of morning's radiance have appeared.

For beneath the clamor of the wicked lies a stillness

That is death, part of what amulets have bequeathed.

Customs that bring calamities to life in the land,

That cleave religion's frame, while religion still stands.

Awake, and rise with a lion's surge!

And do not shrink back, for death crouches in cowardice.

For beneath the veil of silence, features grow

Veiled in evil that meets no resistance.

For a band has weakened religion's arm,

Who stirred up against Islam those who might attack.

So, by the Truth, these Sufi lodges and their people are nothing

But a factory where grudges are forged.

May God curse whoever is not stirred by zeal

For his religion, if great calamities assail it.
