فيin اللَّيلthe night نادَيتُI called to الكَواكِبَthe stars ساخطاًin anger
متأجِّجَablaze with الآلامِpains والآرابِand longings
In the night I called to the stars in anger,
In the night I cried out to the stars in wrath,
Ablaze with pain and longing.
Ablaze with agony and wild desires,
الحقلُthe field يَمْلِكُهُown it جَبابِرَةُthe tyrants of الدُّجىdarkness
والرَّوضُand the garden يسكُنُهُinhabit it بنوthe sons of الأربابِthe lords
The field is owned by the tyrants of darkness,
The fields are possessed by the tyrants of the dark,
And the garden is inhabited by the sons of lords.
And the garden groves are dwelt in by the sons of lords,
والنَّهرُand the river للغولfor the ghoul المقدّسةsacred التيwho
لاnot ترتويquenches her thirst والغابُand the forest للحَطّابِfor the woodcutter
And the river belongs to the sacred ghoul who
The river belongs to that sacred ghoul
Never quenches her thirst, and the forest belongs to the woodcutter.
Which never drinks its fill, and the forest to the woodcutter,
وعرائسُand the brides of الغابِthe forest الجميلِbeautiful هزيلةٌgaunt
ظمأىthirsty لِكُلِّfor every جَنًىfruit وكُلِّand every شَرابِdrink
And the brides of the beautiful forest are gaunt,
While the brides of the lovely woods are gaunt and frail,
Thirsting for every fruit and every drink.
Thirsting for every harvest and every draught.
ماwhat هذهthis الدُّنياthe world الكريهةُloathsome ويلَهاwoe to it
حَقّتْhas become due عليهاupon it لَعْنَةُthe curse of الأحقابِthe ages
What is this loathsome world? Woe to it!
What is this loathsome world—woe unto it!
The curse of the ages is its just due.
Upon which the curse of aeons has been realized.
الكونُthe universe مُصْغٍlistening ياO كواكبُstars خاشعُreverent
طالhas grown long انتظاريmy waiting فانطقيso speak بِجَوابِwith an answer
The universe listens, O stars, in reverence;
The universe is listening, O stars, in solemn awe,
Long have I waited; speak, then, in answer.
My wait has been long, so speak to me an answer!
فسمعتُthen I heard صوتاًa voice ساحراًenchanting متموِّجاًundulating
فوقabove المروجthe meadows الفيحِspacious والأعشابِand the grasses
Then I heard an enchanting, undulating voice
Then I heard a voice, enchanting and undulating,
Above the spacious meadows and the grasses,
Drifting over the fragrant meadows and the grass,
وحَفيفَand the rustling of أجنحةٍwings ترفرفfluttering فيin الفضاthe open air
وصدًىand an echo يَرنُّrings علىover سُكونِthe stillness of الغابthe forest
And the rustle of wings fluttering in the open air,
And the rustle of wings fluttering through the void,
And an echo ringing over the forest's stillness:
And an echo ringing out against the forest's hush:
الفجرُdawn يولدُis born باسماًsmiling متهَلِّلاradiant
فيin الكونِthe universe بَيْنََamid دُجُنَّةٍdeep darkness وضبابِand mist
Dawn is born, smiling and radiant,
"The Dawn is being born, smiling and jubilant,
In the universe, amid deep darkness and mist.
Into the cosmos, betwixt the gloom and mist."
