    If only I knew:

    What bird

    Hears sorrows weeping

    In the depths of hearts,

Then does not cry out at dawn

With the ringing tones of sobbing,

    With humility and dejection?

    I do not know

    What thing

Has silenced the sparrow for me.

    Could feeling have died

    Throughout the whole universe, even

In the innermost souls of birds?

Or has it wept behind the clouds

    In the darkness of night?

    How often I whisper to

The grave's ear, with the choking pangs

    Of my sobbing and my sorrows;

    Then I listen, hoping I

May be made to hear the echo of my moaning,

Then I find my voice alone,

    So I call out:

    O my heart,

The one you love has died, and this

    Grave has embraced the beloved.

So weep, O heart, with what you hold

Of grief that melts you away.

    Weep, O heart, alone.

    مَاتَ حُبِّي

    My heart has been laid low;

    My love has died.

So shed, O eye of night,

    The radiant stars as tears

Around my beloved, for he has

Said farewell to the horizons of life

    After tasting the blaze.

    And lament him,

    And wash him

With the tears of dawn, from

    وَادْفُنِيهِ بجَلالٍ في

    The cups of lily blossoms;

And bury him with majesty on

    The shores of twilight,

That he may see the beloved's spirit.
