سَعيداًhappy بِوَحْدتيin my solitude وانفراديand my seclusion
If only I could live in this world,
Oh, if only I could live in this world
Oh, that I could live my days in this world,
Happy in my solitude and seclusion,
Happy in my solitude and seclusion
Joyous in my solitude, content to be alone,
أصرِفُI spend العُمْرَlife فيin الجبالِthe mountains وفيand in الغاباتِthe forests
بَيْنَamong الصّنوبرِthe pines الميَّادِswaying
Spending my life in the mountains and in the forests,
Spending my life in the mountains and forests
Spending a lifetime amidst the mountains and the woods,
Among the swaying pines.
Amongst the evergreen pines
Beneath the boughs of the swaying pine,
لَيْسَthere is not ليfor me منamong شواغلِthe concerns of العيشِlife مَاanything that يصرفdiverts
نَفْسيmy soul عنِfrom استماعlistening to فؤاديmy heart
I have no cares of life that turn
I have no worldly cares to distract
With none of life's burdens to turn,
My soul away from listening to my heart.
My soul from listening to my heart
My spirit from listening to the whispers of my heart,
أرْقُبُI watch الموتَdeath والحياةَand life وأصغيand I listen
لحديثِto the discourse of الآزالِeternities past والآبادِand eternities to come
I watch death and life, and listen
I observe death and life and listen
Observing death and life, while lending an ear
To the discourse of eternities past and future.
To the tales of the past and future
To the discourse of ancient times and eternities,
وأغنِّيand I sing معwith البلابلِthe nightingales فيin الغابِthe forest
وأُصْغيand I listen إلىto خريرِwater's murmur الواديthe valley
And I sing with the nightingales in the forest,
And sing with the nightingales in the woods
Singing alongside the nightingales of the grove,
And listen to the murmuring of the valley.
And listen to the murmur of the valley
And hearkening to the valley's gentle purl,
وأُناجيand I commune with النُّجومَthe stars والفجرَand the dawn والأطيارَand the birds
والنَّهرَand the river والضّياءَand the light الهاديguiding
And I commune with the stars, the dawn, and the birds,
And converse with the stars, dawn, and birds
Communing with the stars, the dawn, and the birds,
And the river, and the guiding light.
The river and the gentle glow
The flowing river and the soft, guiding light,
عيشةًa life للجمالfor beauty والفنّand art أبغيهاI seek it
بعيداًfar away عنْfrom أمَّتيmy nation وبلاديand my homeland
A life for beauty and art is what I seek,
A life of beauty and art I seek
A life devoted to beauty and art is my desire,
Far from my nation and my homeland.
Far from my people and homeland
Far removed from my nation and my land,
لاnot أُعَنِّيI burden نفسيmyself بأحْزانِwith the sorrows of شعبيmy people
فَهْوَfor it حيٌّalive يعيشit lives عيشَthe life of الجمادِinanimate matter
I do not burden myself with my people's sorrows,
I do not burden myself with my people's sorrows
Not burdening my soul with the sorrows of my people,
For they are alive, yet live the life of inert matter.
For they are alive yet living like the dead
For they are living, yet exist like inanimate stone,
وبحسبيand enough for me منof الأسىsorrow مَاwhat بنفسيwithin my soul
منof طَريفٍfresh مسْتَحْدَثٍnewly arisen وتَلادand long-held
And the sorrow within my soul is enough for me—
And the sadness in my soul is enough
Sufficient unto me is the grief I bear within,
Both fresh, newly arisen grief and grief long held.
Of newfound subtle anguish
Of sorrows both fresh and anciently deep,
وبعيداًand far away عنfrom المَدينةِthe city والنّاسِand the people
بعيداًfar away عنfrom لَغْوِthe idle talk of تِلْكَthose النّواديgatherings
And far from the city and the people,
And far from the city and the people
Far away from the city and the crowds,
Far from the idle talk of those gatherings.
Far from the nonsense of those circles
Far from the idle chatter of their gatherings,
فهوَfor it منfrom مَعْدَنِthe mine of السَّخافةِfoolishness والإفْكِand falsehood
ومنand from ذلكthat الهُراءnonsense العاديcommonplace
For it comes from the mine of folly and falsehood,
It is but foolishness and lies
For it is forged from the ore of folly and deceit,
And from that commonplace nonsense.
And that habitual drivel
And composed of that common, senseless prattle,
أينَwhere هوَit منcompared with خريرِwater's murmur ساقيةwatercourse الواديthe valley
وخفْقِand the pulsing of الصَّدىthe echo وشدوِand the singing of الشَّاديthe singer
How can it compare with the murmur of the valley's stream,
How far it is from the valley's flowing stream
How distinct from the murmur of the valley's brook,
And the echo's pulse, and the singer's song,
And the rhythm of the echoes and the bard's song
The pulsing echo and the chanter's song,
وحفيفِand the rustling of الغصونِthe branches نمَّقهاadorned them الطَّلُّthe dew
وهَمْسِand the whispering of النَّسيمِthe breeze للأولادِto the children
And the rustle of branches adorned by the dew,
The rustling of branches caressed by the dew
The rustle of boughs embellished by the dew,
And the breeze's whisper to the children?
And the whispers of the breeze to the boys
And the breeze whispering secrets to the young ones,
هذهthis عيشةٌa life تقدِّسُهاholds it sacred نفسيmy soul
وأدعوand I call لمجدهاfor its glory وأناديand I cry out
This is a life my soul holds sacred,
This is a life my soul sanctifies
This is the existence my soul holds sacred,
And I call for its glory and cry aloud.
And for its glory I call and proclaim
For whose glory I pray and fervently call.
