سَئِمْتُI grew weary of اللَّياليthe nights وأَوجَاعَهاand their pains
وماand what شعْشَعَتْthey mingled منof رحيقٍnectar بِصَابْwith bitter sap
I grew weary of the nights and their pains,
I grew weary of the nights and their pains,
I have grown weary of the nights and their torment,
And of the nectar they mingled with bitter sap.
And nothing shone of their nectar,
And the nectar they offered, mingled with gall.
فَحَطَّمتُso I shattered كَأْسيmy cup وأَلقَيتُهاand I cast it away
بوَاديinto the valley of الأَسَىsorrow وجَحيمِand the hell of العَذابْtorment
So I shattered my cup and cast it away
So I shattered my cup and cast it away,
So I shattered my cup and cast it aside,
Into the valley of sorrow and the hell of torment.
Into the valley of sorrow and hell of torment.
Into the valley of sorrow and the hellfire of pain.
فأَنَّتْso it moaned وقدْand already غَمَرَتْهاengulfed it الدُّمُوعُthe tears
وقَرَّتْand it grew still وقدْand already فاضَoverflowed مِنْهاfrom it الحَبَابْthe bubbles
So it moaned, already engulfed by tears,
It wept as tears flooded over it,
It moaned as the deluge of tears washed it over,
And grew still as its bubbles overflowed.
And it settled as passion overflowed from it,
And lay still, as its bubbles spilled over the rim.
وأَلقىand cast عليهاover it الأَسَىsorrow ثَوْبَهُits robe
وأَقبرَهاand buried it الصَّمْتُsilence والإكْتِئابْand melancholy
And sorrow cast its robe over it,
Sorrow cast its garb upon it,
Then sorrow draped its heavy mantle upon it,
And silence and melancholy buried it.
And silence and gloom buried it.
And silence and melancholy laid it to rest.
فأَيْنَso where الأَمانيthe hopes وأَلْحانُهاand their melodies
وأَينَand where الكؤوسُthe cups وأَينَand where الشَّرابْthe wine
So where are the hopes and their melodies?
Where now are the wishes and their melodies?
Where now are the hopes and their sweet melodies?
And where are the cups, and where is the wine?
Where are the cups and where is the wine?
Where are the goblets, and where is the wine?
لقدْindeed سَحَقَتْهاcrushed them أكفُّthe hands of الظَّلامِdarkness
وقدْand indeed رَشَفَتْهاsipped them شِفاهُthe lips of السَّرابْthe mirage
Indeed, the hands of darkness have crushed them,
Crushed by the palms of darkness,
The hands of the darkness have crushed them to dust,
And the lips of the mirage have sipped them away.
Drained by the lips of mirage.
And the lips of the mirage have sipped them away.
فمَاso what العَيْشُlife فيin حَوْمَةٍan arena بَأْسُهاits violence
شَديدٌfierce وصَدَّاحُهاand its singer لاnot يُجابْis answered
So what is life in an arena whose violence
What life is there in a raging storm,
For what is life in a realm of such force,
Is fierce, and whose singer goes unanswered?
Whose anger is severe and cannot be answered?
Where the chanter cries out and receives no reply?
كَئيبٌmelancholy وَحِيدٌalone بآلامِهِwith his pains
وأَحْلامِهِand his dreams شَدْوُهُhis song الانْتِحابْsobbing
Melancholy, alone with his pains
Gloomy and lonely in his pains,
Dismal and lone with his anguish he stands,
And his dreams, his song is sobbing.
His dreams cry out in lament.
With his dreams, while his song is a weeping lament.
ذَوَتْwithered فيin الرَّبيعِspring أَزاهِيرُهَاits blossoms
فَنِمْنَso they slept وقدْand already مَصَّهُنَّsucked them dry التُّرابْthe dust
Its blossoms withered in spring,
The flowers of spring withered away,
Its flowers have withered in the height of the spring,
So they slept; the dust had sucked them dry.
Sleeping as the dust covered them.
They slumbered, drained dry by the thirst of the earth.
لوَيِنَthey bent النُّحورَthe necks علىin ذِلَّةٍhumiliation
ومُتْنَand they died وأَحْلامَهُنَّalong with their dreams العِذابْsweet
They bent their necks in humiliation,
If only the gazelles would incline
They bent down their necks in the shadow of shame,
And died along with their sweet dreams.
Their slender necks, and dreams of torment!
And died, taking with them their beautiful dreams.
فَحَالَso faded الجَمَالُbeauty وغَاضَand ebbed العبيرُthe fragrance
وأَذْوىand withered الرَّدَىdeath سِحْرَهنَّtheir charm العُجَابْwondrous
So beauty faded, and the fragrance ebbed,
Beauty departed and fragrance vanished,
So beauty has altered, the fragrance is gone,
And death withered their wondrous charm.
Decay ruined the magic of their charm.
And death has eroded their wondrous charm.
