    How many sweet times

On the bank of the verdant valley,

Silver in their predawn hours, golden

In their late afternoons and early mornings!

They were more tender than flowers

And than the songs of birds,

And sweeter than the magic of youth

    In an innocent child's smile.

I spent them with my beloved beside me,

With no watcher and no warner,

    Only childhood playing around us

    With little love.

    In days when life possessed

The sweetness of a rain-soaked garden,

And the purity of beautiful death,

And the magic of its radiant shore,

And the gentleness of a sparrow among

    Streams of pure water.

In days when we knew nothing of the world

    But the frolic of joy,

    And following graceful bees,

And plucking the crowns of flowers,

    And climbing the mountain crowned

    With pines and rocks,

    And building childhood huts

    Beneath the nests of birds,

    Roofed with roses and grasses

    And fresh green leaves.

We would build, and the winds would tear them down,

Yet we neither clamored nor raged.

And again we would laugh to the meadows,

And to the lilies and the pool,

And address the echoes as they

    Fluttered in the radiant valley.

And we would repeat the song of the water channels

As they chattered in rippling murmurs.

And we would keep running after

    Swarms of butterflies fluttering everywhere,

And pass among the green meadows

    In an intoxication of feeling.

We would sing and dance like nightingales,

    For life and for delight.

And we would keep scattering into the sky,

Vast and open, and into the great river,

All that our two hearts held of

Dreams or the sweetness of illusion.

And we would build on the tinted horizon

    Palaces out of our wishes,

More splendid than the beautiful twilight

And the luster of the verdant meadow,

    And grander than this existence

And all the glories of the ages.

    Life forever subdued them

    With every kind of joy,

And poured into us from the exuberance

Of the universe what would tempt the solemn.

So we would go seeking the play we worshipped

    In everything.

And we would keep trifling with the lofty

In existence, and with the lowly,

With the blind beggar and the mentally impaired,

    And the aged man,

    With the white cat,

With the gentle sheep, with the donkeys,

With grass, with the flowering bough,

With ears of grain, with fallen leaves,

    With sand, with shattered rock,

    With streams, with the pool.

    And play and innocent mischief,

    Sweet, were our ultimate aim.

And we would keep jumping or chattering,

    Or singing or spinning.

We never tired of lovely play,

    Nor did weariness overtake us.

So it was as though we lived with nerves

    Made of exhilarating mirth,

And as though we walked on feet

    Winged and flying.

In days when we were the core of this

Universe, and all the rest was husks.

In days when our paths were carpeted

By the world with flower petals,

And the days of life passed us by

    Like flocks of birds,

    White, playful, singing,

    Winged with light.

    And joys fluttered above

    Our heads wherever we went.

    Ah, my sacred dawn vanished

    Into the night of ages,

And faded as a song fades,

Sweet, in the silence of the ether.

    Alas, I have lost

The happiness of the innocent heart.

And I remained in the valley of time,

    Grim, persevering along the way,

And I tread on life's thorns

    With my bleeding, broken heart.

And I see the many falsehoods,

    And sins and evils,

    And passions colliding with passions

    In every matter,

And the humiliation of powerless truth,

And the glory of powerful injustice.

And I see the son of Adam walking

On the brief walk of life,

    Amid the terrors of existence

And beneath the burdens of conscience,

Climbing the rugged mountain of life

    Like a blind old man,

    With bleeding palms and lacerated

    Feet, with dust-covered hair,

    With faltering steps

    Between slippery places and rocks.

The specters of darkness appalled him,

And the voice of the graves terrified him,

And the roar of sorrow's whirlwind,

And death in those rugged places.

What have I reaped from life

And from the experiences of the ages,

    Other than regret and sorrow,

    And despair and abundant tears?

This is my harvest from the fields

    Of the vast, perilous world.

This is my entire harvest in

The wakefulness of this latter time.

Once, in the time of childhood

    And naivety and purity,

    I lived as nightingales live,

    And streams and flowers.

We cared not whether the world revolved

With its inhabitants, or did not revolve.

And today I live with worn-out

    Nerves and feeling set ablaze,

    My senses burning, I care

About the great and the lowly.

    Life walks upon my heart,

    And the great universe crawls.

This is my fate, O sons of

    My mother—what a wretched fate!
