    Here in the woodland thickets, beneath the beeches,

    And the oaks and the olive trees,

    You are more desirable than life and more radiant

    Than nature's blessed beauty.

    How tender is youth in your supple body,

    And in your wondrous, precious neck!

    And how delicate is beauty in your wandering gaze,

    And in your beautiful, sorrowful lips!

    And how delightful is life when you sing,

    And I listen to your sorrowful voice,

    And see your beautiful soul as a perfume

    Lost in the sweetness of melody.

    You sang a little while ago, in a voice

    Soft, dreamy, plaintive, tender,

    في حَنَانٍ ورقَّةٍ وحنينِ

    A melody like life, sweet and deep,

    In tenderness and gentleness and longing;

    And suddenly the universe was a fragment of a hymn,

    Celestial, melodious, and measured.

    To whom were you singing? And she said:

    To the sorrowful violet light,

    كخيالاتِ حالمٍ مفتونِ

    To the rose-tinted mist dissolving

    Like the visions of a spellbound dreamer;

    جي لسِحْرِ الأَسى وسِحْرِ السُّكونِ

    To the approaching evening, to the hushed twilight,

    To the magic of sorrow and the magic of stillness;

    قِ ويفنى مِثْلَ المنى في سكونِ

    To the fragrance fluttering on the horizon

    And fading like wishes in stillness;

    عي بمزمارِهِ الصَّغيرِ الأَمينِ

    To the songs repeated by the shepherd

    With his small, faithful flute;

    To spring, which kindles in the world

    The life of love and the spirit of longing,

    مِ والزَّهْرِ والشَّذى واللُّحونِ

    And adorns existence with magic and dreams,

    And flowers and fragrance and melodies;

    على السَّهْلِ والرُّبى والحُزُونِ

    To life, which sings around me

    Over the plain, the hills, and the rugged uplands;

    لهذا الثَّرى لتلكَ الغُصونِ

    To the springs, to the birds, to the shade,

    To this earth, to those branches;

    مي بعِطْرِ الأَقاحِ واللَّيمونِ

    To the breeze that perfumes the dreams

    Of mine with the scent of daisies and lemon;

    نيا لأشواقِ قلبيَ المشجونِ

    To the beauty overflowing upon the world,

    To the yearnings of my sorrowful heart;

    مي بضَوءِ المنى وظلِّ الشُّجونِ

    To time, which drapes the days

    Of mine in the light of wishes and the shadow of sorrows;

    To drunken youth, to worshipped hope,

    To despair, to sorrow, to death.

    Then I sighed and said: And my heart—

    Who will sing to it? Who will dispel my sorrows?

    She said: Love. Then she sang to my heart

    Kisses of inspired melody,

    Kisses that taught my heart songs

    And lit for it the darkness of the years,

    Kisses—happiness and love dance

    To their deep, stately melody.

    And we awoke; I said, like a spellbound dreamer:

    Say something, speak, tell me:

    What enchanted world, what vision

    Appeared to me in the light of these eyes?

    Bands of angels of the highest assembly

    Singing with tender compassion,

    And dancing maidens pelting one another

    With apple blossoms and jasmine,

    In a rose-tinted, dreamy, distracted expanse

    Encircled by the maidens of the arts,

    And a hell blazing beneath paradises,

    Like the dreams of a mad poet!

    What fiery wine, and what flame,

    Intoxicating—what rapture and madness!

    What wine have I sipped—no, what fire,

    In lips of wondrous form,

    Made rosy by life in the flame of magic,

    And the light of love and the shadow of sorrows?

    What sacred sin have we donned

    The cloak of, in our blessed evening?

    Then a sweet, enchanting trace of a smile appeared

    Upon her lips, potent in its allure.

    And she answered, all of her an allure that seduces

    And tempts to love—no, to madness:

    You are forever a dreamer; ask the night,

    For darkness holds certain knowledge.

    بِ فأصغى حتَّى حَفيفُ الغُصونِ

    We fell silent, and love sang in the woodland;

    Even the rustling of the branches listened.

    And night and spring built around

    Us, from magic, visions, and stillness,

    A poetic temple to beauty and love,

    Raised upon the mountain passes of the years.

    Beneath it, time surges and flows,

    Silent in its sorrowful course,

    And days and grief and death pass

    Far from its safe shade.

    رُ على الصَّخرِ والثَّرى والغُصونِ

    An enchanting temple, whose censers are flowers

    On the rocks, the earth, and the branches;

    Each blossom gives off a fragrance

    Of spring's incense, rich in enchantment.

    And the stars of heaven within it are candles

    Lit for love by the spirit of the centuries.

    A breeze passed, whispering to the woodland

    And singing in the depths of that stillness.

    Magic and passion surged within my heart,

    And I pleaded, beseechingly, with my eyelids:

    Purify my lips, O twin of my soul,

    With life's flame—rather, kiss me.

    Indeed, life's fire and the longed-for Kawthar

    Are in your delectable, sorrowful lips.

    For they are a magical cup for the nectar of

    Immortality, fashioned by the god of the arts.

    Kiss me, and intoxicate my thirsty lips,

    And my heart, my enchantment, and my madness,

    Perhaps I may be able to sing

    To the beauty of night, inspired by eyes.

    Ah, how beautiful the darkness, how powerful

    Its inspiration in my spellbound heart!

    Look at the night: it is a robe of dreams,

    Walking over the peaks and rugged uplands.

    And listen to the woodland: it is the universe's lyre,

    Singing to our blessed love.

    بِ بعيدُ المدى قويُّ الفُتونِ

    Indeed, the magic of mist and night and woodland

    Is far-reaching, mighty in its enchantment;

    And the beauty of darkness is fragrant with dreams

    And love—so smile and kiss me.

    Ah, how sweet is passion, how lovely

    The sound of kissing in the reverence of stillness!

    And there we grew intoxicated in the world of dreams,

    Beneath the sky, beneath the branches.

    Existence vanished from us, with all that was in

    It, and we vanished into a spellbound world.

    And we forgot life and death and stillness,

    And all the wishes and doom it holds.
