    I walked through the garden,

    as morning’s first signs appeared,

    and dawn’s wing beckoned

    toward the winged ladies.

    And darkness moved slowly,

with the gait of a supple, full-hipped woman.

    And the morning breeze drifted,

    balmy over the broad plains.

And the river’s murmur was drunk,

while the garden’s blossoms were sober.

Then toward the majesty of the universe gazed

    the radiant sun.

    Then she appeared unveiled,

    scandalously—utterly laid bare.

Then she sipped the dew-wine of pitch-dark

night from the cup of daisies.

    And Bilqis ascended the throne

    of night in those regions.

    Then she inclined toward sunset,

    after kindling the struggle.

And night settled, despite the sun,

    upon the spacious throne.

Thus is time, in the guises

    of morning and evening,

    and light and darkness,

    and stillness and clamour,

    and song and wafting fragrance,

    and dejection and gladness.

    Time and the covenant

of the nights are but like Shujah.
