بَذَرَsowed الحُبُّLove بَذْرَهُhis seed
فيin فُؤاديmy heart فَأوْرَقاso it put forth leaves
Love sowed his seed
Love sowed its seeds deep within me,
in my heart, and it put forth leaves,
And in my heart, they sprouted leaves.
بِلِحاظٍwith glances نَوافِثٍbreathing spells
فَجَنَىso reaped حَظِّيَmy lot الشَّقاmisery
with spell-breathing glances;
With glances casting potent spells,
so my lot reaped misery.
My fortune harvested despair.
وسَعَىand set running فيهِin it مُهْرَهُhis colt
عَادِياًgalloping ثمَّthen أعْنَقاsped on
And he drove his colt through it,
Love's steed ran wild within my breast,
galloping, then speeding on.
Charging hard, then galloping free.
رُبَّmany a ظَبْيٍgazelle عَلِقْتُهُI loved him
بالبَهاin beauty قَدْhad تَقَرْطَقاdonned a tunic
Many a gazelle I loved
O for a gazelle I held so dear,
had donned beauty as a tunic.
Cloaked in robes of radiant light.
ثمَّthen منof وَصْلِهِunion with him الجَميbeauti- (word continues)
لِ-ful (word ending) غَداbecame القَلْبُthe heart مُمْلِقاdestitute
Then, of beautiful union with him,
Then, severed from his lovely grace,
the heart became destitute.
My heart was left in poverty.
سَحَرَbewitched اللُّبَّthe mind طَرْفُهُhis gaze
مَاwhat دَهاbefell الرِّيقَthe saliva لوif رَقىcast a healing spell
His gaze bewitched the mind;
His glance bewitched my very core;
what harm if his saliva cast a healing spell?
His nectar heals, were he to cure.
أوْصَبَmade ill الصَّبَّthe lovesick one صَدُّهُhis rejection
والشَّقاand misery لَوْif تَرَفَّقاhe showed gentleness
His rejection sickened the lover,
His shunning made the lover sick,
and woe, were he to show tenderness!
Though kindness could have eased the woe.
صارَbecame مُلْقًىcast down بِحُبِّهِthrough love for him
موثَقاًbound لَيْسَnot مُطْلَقاset free
Through love for him, he lay cast down,
I am cast down by love of him,
bound fast, not set free.
A captive bound, never set free.
صارَbecame ذاpossessed of جِنَّةٍmadness بِهِbecause of him
ذاpossessed of عَذابٍtorment مُؤَرّقاkept sleepless
He became mad for him,
Possessed by madness for his sake,
tormented and kept sleepless.
In torment held, bereft of sleep.
يَرْقُبُwatches البَدْرَthe full moon جَفْنُهُhis eyelid
لِيُناجيهِto confide in it مَاwhat لَقىhe suffered
His eyelid watches the full moon,
My eyelid watches for the moon,
to confide to it what he has suffered.
To whisper all the pain I bore.
هامَflowed فيin العَيْنِthe eye غَرْبُهُhis stream of tears
وهَمَىand streamed ثمَّthen أغْدَقاpoured abundantly
His tear-stream coursed within the eye,
The tear-duct wandered in the eye,
and streamed, then poured profusely.
It flowed, then poured a heavy rain.
وهَمَىand poured down صَوْبُthe downpour of هَمِّهِhis sorrow
فَاسْتَقَىso he drew water منهُfrom it مَاwhat اسْتَقىhe drew
And the rain of his sorrow poured down,
The clouds of sorrow drenched my soul,
so from it he drew what he drew.
And from that grief, I drank my fill.
كَمْhow many قُلوبٍhearts تَفَطَّرَتْwere torn apart
ودَمٍand blood صارbecame مُهْرَقاspilled
How many hearts were torn apart,
How many hearts were cleft in two,
and how much blood was spilled,
And innocent blood was spilled in vain?
ودُموعٍand tears تَسَلْسَلَتْflowed in succession
مثلَlike غَيْمٍa cloud تَدَفَّقاpoured forth
and tears streamed one after another,
And tears that flowed in endless chains,
like a cloud pouring forth,
Just like a cloud that bursts in flood.

without the souls swallowing
Before the thirsting souls could taste
sweet, limpid saliva!
The pure elixir of his mouth.
وشَقيقٍand an anemone بِخَدِّهِon his cheek
مُهَجَthe hearts of الخَلْقِhumankind شَقَّقَtore apart
And an anemone upon his cheek
The red anemone of his cheek
has torn the hearts of humankind.
Has split the hearts of all mankind.
ثَغْرُهُhis mouth منfrom عُقودِهِhis necklaces
ودُموعيand my tears تَنَسَّقاwas strung in order
His mouth, from his necklaces
His smiling mouth, with rows of pearls,
and my tears, was strung.
Is matched by my cascading tears.
خَصْرُهُhis waist منfrom نَحافَتيmy thinness
وَنُحوليand my wasting تَمَنْطَقاgirded itself
His waist, with my thinness
His waist, from my infirmity,
and my wasting, was girdled.
Has tied a belt of thinness on.
مَرْشَفاهُhis two lips بِخَدِّهwith his cheek
ودِمائيand my blood تخلَّقاanointed themselves with perfume
His two lips, with his cheek
His sipping lips beside his cheek
and my blood, were anointed.
Are colored crimson by my blood.
مِنfrom لَظَىthe blaze of جَمرِthe embers of خَدِّهِhis cheek
كَبِديmy liver قَدْhas تَحَرَّقاburned up
From the blaze of his cheek's embers,
From the fierce burning of his cheek,
my liver has burned up.
My liver has been seared to ash.

His figure above his hips—
His torso rises o'er his hips,
a bān-tree bough upon a sand dune.
A willow branch upon a dune.
جيدُهُhis neck تَحْتَbeneath فَرْعِهِhis hair
بَرْقُthe lightning of غَيْمٍa cloud تَألَّقاflashed
His neck beneath his hair—
His neck beneath his flowing hair
a cloud's lightning, flashing bright.
Is lightning flashing through the clouds.

نَسَباًa lineage صارَbecame مُعْرِقاdeep-rooted
My lineage in love for him
My lineage in the love of him
has become a deeply rooted lineage.
Has grown deep roots of ancient stock.
