    وشَجَاهُ اليومُ فَما غَدُهُ

    Yesterday sang to him and delighted him;

and today saddened him—what of his tomorrow?

He once had a heart like a child,

rocked by the hand of dreams,

since he had an angel in the universe,

fair of face, whom he worships.

In the depths of night he confides in him,

and in dawn's presence he glorifies him.

And on the hills he sings to him

verses of love, and chants to him.

Without him, there would have been no sweetness in

his departures and arrivals in the universe.

Nor would they have overflowed with living poetry—

    his feelings and his poems.

In the woods they walk, then follow him—

the joys of love, which seek him.

He sees the horizons and beholds them

as bands in the light, watching for him.

He sees the birds and thinks them

dreams of love, singing to him.

He sees the flowers and thinks them

smiles of love, coming to him in turn.

So he imagines the universe confiding in him,

and the world's beauty making him happy,

and the stars of night laughing with him,

and the woodland breeze chasing him.

And he imagines the roses caressing him

joyfully, so his hand plays with them.

He sees the spring and its gaze,

and the morning breeze ripples it.

The murmur of water is, to him, a melody

    that the woodland breezes repeat.

He sees the grasses, which have grown tall

    among the trees, watching him;

and the child's girdle adorns them.

So he reveres love and praises it.

Ah, the days! How often they have gladdened

a heart among people, only to fill it with grief.

They are like a harlot: her lover

she plies with wine and drives away.

    Today gives you her sweetness,

like honey, only for its tomorrow to steal it away.

    Yesterday he embraced her joyfully

and lay with her; then she pillowed his head.

Today he walks beside her as a ghost,

worn down and made wretched by sorrow.

He recites his elegies in the woods,

and the cypress trunks support him.

He walks alongside people, yet not one

of them is saddened by his solitude.

Through the night of desolation runs his path,

and in the cave of solitude lies his resting place.

    Yesterday's voices torment him,

and the specter of death threatens him.

    يُضيءُ الأُفْقَ تورُّدُهُ

    Yesterday he had a twilight glow in the universe;

its rosy hue lit the horizon.

And today the night has indeed shrouded him,

so nothing in the world brings him joy.

    وشَجَاهُ اليَومَ فَما غَدُهُ

    Yesterday sang to him and delighted him;

and today saddened him—what of his tomorrow?
