O wretched, stubborn child of life,

Ah, you have strayed far astray!

Do you seek life's melodious voice

While you are a prisoner in this existence,

And seek the morning's tinted roses

From the palm of a reaped field?

To death, if you desire ease in life—

For beyond death's darkness lies what you desire.

To death, O unhappy son of life:

For in death is life's melodious voice.

To death, if the ages have tormented you:

For in death is the ages' merciful heart.

To death: death is a beautiful spirit

    Fluttering above those clouds,

    Rejoicing in immortality's joyous dawn

And in the daughters of the stars around it.

To death: death is a thirst-quenching goblet

For whoever the desert's scorching winds have parched.

And if you thirst, you will not be quenched

From the sweet spring before death.

For tears are nothing but the drink of the ages,

And sorrow is nothing but life's nourishment.

To death: death is a soft cradle

In whose arms all beings sleep.

To death, if calamities besiege you

And bar your path to peace:

For in death's realm, life sheds

The robe of sorrow and the mask of darkness,

    يَفيضُ على وَجْهِها الإِبْتِسامْ

    And appears as she was created, fresh and tender;

    A smile overflows her face.

She restores upon herself the shades of immortality,

And the hearts of humankind flutter over her.

To death: do not fear its depths,

For within them is heaven's gentle light.

And within them heaven's maidens sway,

    Naked, singing a wondrous melody.

    يُحَرِّكْنَها في فَضَاءٍ يَضُوعْ

    And in their palms are palm-tree branches;

They wave them in a fragrant expanse.

In it the smiles of hearts shine,

And in it the sorrows of tears fade.

It is death, immortality's beautiful apparition,

And the half of life that does not lament.

    There, beyond the distant expanse,

    Lives Death, mighty and radiant-faced.

He gathers hearts to his breast

To heal the wounds that have pained them,

And awaken life's spring within them,

And gladden them with the joyous morning.
