ياO قلبيَmy heart الدَّاميbleeding إلامَhow long الوُجومْgloom
يَكْفيكَenough for you إنَّindeed الحُزْنَsorrow فظٌّharsh غَشُومْtyrannical
O my bleeding heart, how long this gloom?
O my grieving heart, why so gloomy?
O my bleeding heart, how long this sullen gloom?
Enough! Sorrow is harsh and tyrannical.
Enough, sorrow is harsh and overwhelming
Enough, for sorrow is a savage, crushing weight.
هذيthese كؤوسيmy cups مُرَّةًbitter كالرَّدىlike death
مَاnot مِلْؤُهاtheir contents إلاَّbut عصيرُjuice of الهُمومْcares
These are my cups, bitter as death;
These are my cups, bitter as misery
Here stand my cups, as bitter as the grave,
their contents are nothing but the juice of cares.
Filled with nothing but the juice of worries
Filled with naught but the pressed essence of woe.
وذاكَand that نايِيmy flute صامتٌsilent واجِمٌforlorn

And that is my flute, silent and forlorn,
That flute of mine, silent and sullen
And there my flute lies silent, grim and still,
listening to the voice of old love.
Listening to the sound of old love
Listening to the echoes of an ancient love.
ياO قلبيَmy heart الباكيweeping إلامَhow long البُكَاweeping
مَاnot فيin فضاءِthe expanse of الكونِthe universe شيءٌa thing يدومْendures
O my weeping heart, how long this weeping?
O my crying heart, why the tears?
O my weeping heart, how long will tears flow?
Nothing in the expanse of the universe endures.
Nothing in the universe is lasting
When nothing in this vast cosmos remains.
فانثُرْso scatter غُبارَthe dust of الحُزْنsorrow فوقَover الدُّجَىdarkness
واسمعْand listen إلىto صوتِthe voice of الشَّبابِyouth الرخِيمْmellow
So scatter the dust of sorrow over the darkness,
Scatter the dust of sorrow over the darkness
Scatter the dust of grief upon the night,
and listen to the mellow voice of youth.
And listen to the voice of gentle youth
And hearken to the dulcet voice of youth.
وانقُرْand tap علىon دَفِّthe tambourine of الهَوَىlove لحنَهُits melody

And beat its melody on love's tambourine,
Strum on the rhythm of passion's drum
Beat upon passion's drum its rhythmic tune,
and dance with the laughing, handsome light.
And dance with the charming, smiling light
And dance alongside the light, laughing and fair.

إنْif لمْnot أَلُمْI blame قلبيmy heart فَمَنْthen whom أَلومْshall I blame
O my darkened heart, how long this gloom?
O my burning heart, why so gloomy?
O my shadowed heart, how long this sullen gloom?
If I do not blame my heart, whom shall I blame?
If I don't blame my heart, who do I blame?
If I blame not my heart, whom shall I blame?

Why do you listen to nothing but grief?
Why don't you listen to anything but sorrow?
Why do you heed nothing but sorrow's call,
Why do you gaze at nothing but wounds?
Why don't you look to anything but miseries?
Why gaze you upon nothing but your wounds?

Why have you come to spend your days
Why have you spent your days
Why have you come to spend the fleeting days,
only in the ravines of hell?
Only in the valleys of hell?
Nowhere but in the valleys of a living hell?

Do you not see the nightingale in its forest,
Don't you see the bulbul in the forest
Do you not see the nightingale in his grove,
singing, while above the forest the stars tread?
Singing while the stars stride above the trees?
Singing, while stars tread softly overhead?

Do you not see the predawn hours, when the forests appear
Don't you see the dawns when the forests appear
Do you not see the dawns reveal the woods,
like dreams behind the mist?
Like dreams behind the haze?
Like fleeting dreams behind a veil of mist?

Don't you see hopes in their magic?
Do you not see the hopes in their enchantment,
Do you not see the night cooing to the stars?
Don't you see the night flirting with the stars?
Do you not see the night caress the stars?

أكثرتَyou have overdone it ياO قلبيmy heart فماذاthen what ترومْyou seek
O my darkened heart, how long this gloom?
O my burning heart, why so gloomy?
O my shadowed heart, how long this sullen gloom?
You have overdone it, my heart—what, then, do you seek?
You have complained too much, my heart, so what do you want?
You have grieved too long, my heart; what do you seek?
هلْdo تَحِسَبُyou think الأَيَّامَthe days فيin زَحْفِهاtheir march
ترثِيmourn لمَنْfor whoever قَدْalready هَدَّمَتْهُhave shattered him الرُّجومْhurled stones
Do you think the days, in their march,
Do you think the days in their march
Do you suppose the days, in their relentless march,
mourn for one whom hurled stones have shattered?
Will mourn those demolished by disasters?
Will mourn for him whom stones of fate have crushed?
كَلاّno فإنَّfor indeed الدَّهْرtime يمضيmoves on ولاand does not

No! Time moves on, and does not
No, time passes and does not
Nay! For Time moves on and never turns,
look back at any wounded soul behind it.
Turn back to the forgotten past
To glance upon the wounded left behind.
واليمُّand the sea لاnot يَرْثِيmourns لمَنْfor whoever طمَّهُhas engulfed him

And the sea does not mourn for one it has engulfed,
The sea does not mourn those drowned by its waves
The sea laments not him whom it engulfs,
and the torrent does not weep for the wailing of dry brushwood.
The flood does not weep for the debris
Nor does the torrent weep for broken reeds.
والعاصِفُand the gale الجبَّارmighty فيin سُخْطِهِits wrath

And the mighty gale, in its wrath,
The mighty raging storm
The mighty storm, within its raging wrath,
has no mercy on the graceful, upright branch.
Has no mercy for the upright slender branch
Spares not the graceful bough, however straight.

This is the world—so why this grief,
This is the world, so why the grief
Such is the world; then wherefore this despair?
O my bleeding heart, and why this gloom?
O my grieving heart, and why the gloom?
O my bleeding heart, why keep this sullen gloom?
