Indeed, I see—and see vast multitudes,

    yet they live without understanding.

Time thunders around them, as though

it were thundering around stones and dust.

And when they respond to time, they disown one another

and pelt one another with thorns and pebbles,

and destroy the spirit of brotherhood among them

in ignorance, and live the life of strangers.

The ghoul of misery and annihilation rejoices in them,

and so do the ambitions of the plunderer and the conqueror.

Playthings moved by greed and largesse,

and by petty grudges and desires.

And I see souls of congealed smoke,

    dead, like ghosts behind mist.

Dead, they have forgotten life's longing and resolve,

and move as stone idols move.

And the flame of existence has died within them; they remain

    only like charred wood.

No heart plunges boldly into life, nor is there a mind

that soars as a far-ranging bird soars.

Rather, in dead dust, in the rough terrain of earth,

their feelings grow alongside the weeds,

and die listlessly, like a wretched flower

that grows and withers in the forest's darkness.

Forever they stare at the dust and do not see

the light of the sky, for their spirit is like dust.

The gifted poet pours out his art

in vain upon feet and thresholds,

and lives in a barren, dead universe

that the stupidity of the ages has built.

And the erudite scholar spends his life

understanding words and studying a book.

He lives on the decayed remains of the loathed past,

like worms in the cinders of burnt-out ash.

    دنياهُ دنيا مأكلٍ وشَرابِ

    And the people, between the two, are a lost herd;

their world is a world of food and drink.

Woe to the sensitive soul in their world!

What sorrow and torment he endures!
