Your noble bones sanctified your grave;
The bones sanctified your grave, peace be upon them,
Your grave is sanctified by the great bones within it,
so upon them be peace from the Source of Peace.
And sorrows have struck me, preventing lament,
Upon them be peace, the truest peace.

And sorrows struck me at the tidings of your death,
As my tears and the clouds struck you.
Sorrows have afflicted me at your departure,
and my tears and the clouds rained upon you.
O extinguished rocket, the grave concealed it,
Just as my tears and the rainclouds have poured upon you.

Despite the sublime, mud surrounded you.
O shooting star that faded, now hidden by the grave,
despite your eminence, the dust enfolded you.
The angels and people bid your funeral farewell,
Despite your high station, the dust now embraces you.

And the generous crowded around the generous.
Angels and men walked behind your funeral bier,

Amazingly, without any call,
And the noble souls crowded against the noble souls.

Wondrously, around it, without a summons,
The world gathered, and the flags.
A wonder! Around it, without any summons issued,
all peoples and the eminent were gathered.
We saw the light hastening before it,
Crowds of the world and distinguished figures gathered.

We saw the divine Light moving before him,
so the worshippers stood, and the imam.

Are those tents compared to the possessor of tents?
A tent has been pitched over you, yet,
what are those tents beside these tents?
The sky and earth cried over you bitterly,
How far are these earthly tents from those celestial pavilions.

Heaven and Earth wept for you in bereavement,
so the rain and streaming tears met.
Glory was angry that I eulogized you alone,
So the falling rain and flowing tears mingled together.

Then calmed down and said “You are the people.”
Glory was angered that I alone sang your elegy,
then lowered its gaze and said, 'You are all mankind.'
The princes of speech lived and died,
Then it relented and said, "You represent all mankind."

Princes of speech—you lived while they died;
So they were the beginning, and you the perfection.
You lived, O princes of speech, while others died;
so they are the beginning, and you the completion.
If a servant lives long, he will be replaced,
They were merely the beginning, and you are the perfection.

So they became futile, the days after you.
He was the ornament of the days, then he departed,
so after him the days are bare of adornment.
You were a star, feared by the preceded moon,
Leaving the days hereafter stripped of all adornment.

Death has undone the knot of my hopes in him,
so after him death grew sweet and lawful.
O son of one who terrified the regions,
So death settled in, and the bitter end became sweet.

So the pens stabbed with stabbing, and the palms wrote.
O son of one who commanded awe across the lands, until
the pens thrust in place of spear-thrusts and lances.
If you had lingered four or three years,
Pens struck like spears in the heat of battle.

Had you lingered but three or four days more,
the mighty lord would have risen from his throne for you.
Lightning snatched news of your decree,
The great master would have risen from his throne for you.

The lightning faltered in its flash at your calamity,

Yet, the souls within us are but borrowed loans,
so bodies stand bare without the souls they wore.
How many ambitions did the ambitions lead
And the bodies that wear them are borrowed too.

How many heroes, raised high by their ambitions,
gifts and the mighty host availed him nothing against death.

But Yam found no protection from the rising waters.

Alas! Scarcely had I suckled at the breast of hopes,
The breast of hopes until weaning came to me.
Woe is me! I had scarcely nursed from the breast of hope,
my little son, when weaning came upon me.
Fate cried over you violently, so it cried,
O my son, before the abrupt weaning came to me.

Time rebuked Fihr through you, so she rebuked in turn;
And I - only agony led me to agony.
Fate struck the clan of Fihr through you, and they wept,
and as for me, it shattered me—how long shall I be blamed?
If the weeping continued weeping after you
And I am broken—how long shall I be blamed?

Were the heartstricken one to weep after you until
Until rock sprouted leaves, the weeping would not be quenched.
If the grieving lover wept for you until
rocks sprouted leaves, the heartstricken one would find no relief.
You knew the fault with realities, inspired
The very rocks sprouted leaves, his grief would not be healed.

For revelation and inspiration are much alike.

And when it consoled, it was oppressed.
The tribe of Fihr, when Time once congratulated them,
offered condolences; when she grew mighty, she was wronged.
Fate frowned at them, so it turned away
Is now receiving condolences; crushed where they were once mighty.

I am betrayed if I do not cease consolation
When your smiling face no longer appeared.
