The arrows of the evil eye struck you, and God let them pierce.
The arrows of eyes have struck you, by Allah's decree,
The arrows of the evil eye struck you, and God executed His decree;
And you received none until He decreed their hold upon you.
And you were seized before fulfilling any purpose.
You were not taken until He had fully accomplished His purpose in you.

So you died, and a caring man said, 'Praise be to God,'
So pass away praising God, as a compassionate one says,
So you died, while a compassionate one said, "Praise be to God,"
having prayed over you and invoked protection with His most beautiful names.
Protecting you with His beautiful names, caring and guarding.
Reciting His Beautiful Names over you for healing and protection.

If He wished, He would have healed your beautiful face,
Had He willed, He would have healed your beautiful face, which
swelled until I feared it would split apart.
That became inflamed until I feared it would fester.
Swelled until I feared it would disintegrate into fragments.

From the eternal garden foods that nourished you.
He nourished you with the sustenance of the Garden of Eternity.

I hoped for you, my son, while time was against me,
I placed my hopes in you, O my son, when time was my ally;
I strove to protect you, while it strove to strike you down.
I strove to protect you, while it strove to seize you.
I strove for preservation, while fate strove for your destruction.

And when God took the soul of the one in whom I placed my hope,
while the one complained of for harm and irritation lived on,
And spared whom I complain of, hurting and wounding me.
While the one who causes nothing but harm and irritation lived on,

I cast out and wronged the harlot's son, though often
I embraced the son of animosity, having often
I cast aside and blamed the son of the transgressor, though for so long
I had interceded for him, that he not be wronged or cast out.
Interceded for him, that he not be rejected and abandoned.
I had interceded for him, that he not be wronged or rejected.

I wrenched my heart from the arches of its ribs;
I wrenched my heart from the sorrows of his ribs,
I wrenched my heart from the hollows of its ribs;
and the earth seized you only to wrench you away.
And the earth only pulled you to be wrenched away.
And the earth only drew you down so that you might be drawn unto it.

A reproacher blamed my weeping, and they said, 'Is there no guidance?'
One devoid of guidance flashed a bare smile, and they said "Lo! Guidance!"
A critic blamed me for my weeping, asking, "Is there no guidance?"
I answered, letting tears stream: 'Cast that aside!'
So I said "Nay! Begone!" and let my tears flow.
I replied, as I poured forth tears, "Cast that thought away!"

Those who call upon me to sorrow for you
Those who console me regarding you only drive me to sorrow,
and losing you burns hotter in my heart than the ḥadhā herb.
Make the loss of you in my heart more painful than burns.
And the bereavement of you is hotter in my heart than burning acid.

My heart insists on being torn to pieces with grief,
My heart refused to be cut up with sorrow
My heart refused all but to be torn to pieces in heartbreak,
and gladly heats my ribs over the fire.
And to protect upon the fire my blistered chest.
And to roast these ribs over the fire, welcoming the pain.

I have lost one young, venerable in years,
You struck down one young in years but great in brilliance,
fresh-faced, nimble-hearted, a discerning genius.
The core of the core, the noblest entertainment, snatched away.
Fresh of face, the heart of my heart, a keen intellect.

Gentle are his ways, and refined his nature
His manners refine, his nature gently inspired,
His nature was gentle, his character elegant and refined,
and his manners, till they say, 'He has adopted Baghdad's refinement.'
And his customs, until it is said "he took on dignity".
And his manners so polished, one would say he was of Baghdad.

Glory bends fondly toward him for the heights he attained;
Glory bows to him for what elevated him,
Glory bent affectionately toward him for the heights he reached,
and the lion yields to him for his seasoned wisdom.
And prominence yields to him from what gave him distinction.
And the lion submitted to him for the mettle he displayed.

Was he not the pride of Fahr bin Malik's clan?
He was nothing less than the pride of the line of Fihr bin Malik;
He saw their example in glory's citadel and followed it.
Seeing their glory in the cup of glory, he emulated it.
He saw their footing in the citadel of glory and followed their path.

Even deaf enemies would shudder at the mention of his name,
their skins bristling until the lion looks like a hedgehog.
Their skins crawl until you see the lion shudder.
Their skins crawling until you saw the lion curl up like a hedgehog.

My eye is cooled by him when it burns because of them,
My eyes draw near him when heated with anger at them,
My eye found solace in him when inflamed by the enemy,
and is troubled when grit is cast in it—and they are the grit.
And burn when I am burned while they are the burning.
But now it is irritated with grit, and they are that grit.

I kiss the ruby radiance of his cheek;
and had he lived for me, I would have kissed his emerald.
If he had lived I would have kissed his downy cheek too.
Had he lived, I would have kissed the emerald down upon his face.

It was misery to me in life, he who had brought me joy,
He who once brought me joy in this life has now grieved me,
and he who once saved me has drowned me in tears.
And he who rescued me drowned me in tears.
And he who was my savior has now drowned me in tears.

how could there be, when he had neither ejaculated at puberty nor emitted preseminal fluid?
How could he, when he wished no transgression or passing fancy?
And how could he, having reached neither puberty nor its precursors?

He never once harmed a Muslim with his tongue,

Nor with his hands; rather, he patiently endured harm.

Leaving only his sweet memory behind.
And nothing remains but his memory to be savored.

The light hastened around his coffin and his possessions,
Light strove around his bier, and its promises
declared, 'Pure is he whose funeral is like this.'
Saying "Purified is he whose scene was thus".
Testified, "Pure is the one whose farewell scene is such as this."

The Muslims prayed over him in their multitudes,

Except for the jurist, the magician.
And the judge of piety—excluding only the charlatan jurist.

We found him to be the most righteous and gentle".
Have we lost? We found him more righteous and precious than all."

So, for him, they watered the earth to fullness with their weeping,
So they watered the earth around his pure, fragrant grave,
They drenched the earth for his sake with a torrent of weeping,
and circled his sweet-scented grave amid its perfume.
Circling his tomb, crying profusely.
And circled the fragrance of his grave, so sweet of scent.

If the star of glory could feel his coffin,
A star of highness—if his bier possessed reason,
it would have resembled my heart in grief and shattered.
It would resemble my heart, cracked with grief.
It would have resembled my heart in grief and shattered into splinters.

The heights of honor say, whenever they marvel at him,
Sublimity says, whenever I am amazed by him,
Noble virtues say, whenever they marvel at him:
'For one like you, the Arabs said, "How excellent! How delightful!"'
"For the likes of you the Arabs say 'Blessed and congratulated!'"
"For one like you, the Arabs coined the words 'Excellent' and 'Beloved'."

Its polish the practice of deep thought and focus.
Its polisher was the exercise of thought and constant honing.

He discerned the subtle difference between 'In' and 'An',
and distinguished 'idh' from 'idha' when learning was discussed.
And distinguished "dignity" from "when".
And distinguished the rules of grammar concerning 'Idha'.

He regarded the schoolhouse as the delight of his eye,
when the schoolboys tired of it and sought escape.
When the young students filled him with joy.
When the other schoolboys grew weary and sought to slip away.

He swore if ninefold more came to him,
I swear, had he completed twice his nine years,
every teacher would have bowed to him and become his pupil.
He would gratify every teacher who taught him.
Every professor of his would have bowed and become his pupil.

O Abd al-Ghani, my son, you were exceptional in nobility,
O my son, you were unique in your nobility,
O Abd al-Ghani, my son, you were singular in your nobility,
and noble souls like you have always been rare.
And the noble have remained like you, singular.
And the truly noble, like you, have always been rare exceptions.

You surpassed illustrious men of mature years in forbearance and eminence;
You humiliated the foolish old men with wisdom and calm,
You surpassed noble elders in forbearance and dominion;
so have we known Fihr, outstripping other people.
Thus we knew Fahr among the people, most singular.
Thus have we known the clan of Fihr to surpass all mankind.

It is as if you recite the remembrance, learning from it,
It was as if you recited the Remembrance, heeding its lessons,
you chant it measuredly, while others rattle it off.
Chanting it slowly while people chant it hastily.
Chanting it with care, while others rushed through their recitation.

Can I imagine any meaning for myself, though I was unique—
Shall I be bereft of meaning though I am but one,
Do I claim any significance for myself? Even if I stood alone,
one who surpassed his people in refinement and stood apart?
When the people have lost your manners and uniqueness?
He outstripped the people in his culture and stood peerless.

My eye finds no outlet on earth.
Nor can I find any way of escape upon this earth.
