Shall I not weep, when there has set
Should I not weep, for the moon that was with me has now set?
Should I not weep when he has set? A moon from me appeared, only to vanish.
a moon sprung from me, who rose as a replacement?
The buds have bloomed, though not with beauty as before.
The brightest full moons were perfect, yet they did not complete beauty as he did.

The radiant full moons reached fullness, but never
Alas for my night, now gloomy in dusk,
He brightened my night with his brow, then faded, fulfilling his appointed time.
did they grow as perfect in beauty as he.
Fulfilling its fate as time passes.
Did the shooting stars not ransom him on the day he fell, stars that were but servants to him?

He dispelled my night with his bright brow,
Were not his glories apparent when alone?
Great was the calamity of glory regarding him; how often his face revealed great things.
then faded, having fulfilled his allotted span.
Greatness was his attribute, glory his mantle.
Chosen for his morals, he strove earnestly, moving on toward the Garden of Paradise.

Or did they not ransom him on the day he set—
Chosen in character, he journeyed straight
He left the world and preferred the Hereafter, proving it by the deeds he performed therein.
the bright stars that had been his servants?
To Paradise, a place of peace.
He made me forget every beautiful woman who sends her glances like spears.

Great was glory's calamity in him; how often
He left this world, preferring the next,
And the bitterness of death became sweet to him when he saw the world was but mud to us.
his countenance dispelled a grave calamity!
Acting with wisdom in all he did.
The tribe of Fihr signaled their distress when he turned away and sought refuge.

the Garden of Firdaws, passing on.
When they saw he spurned the world’s empty joys.
Or perhaps He who raised the moon brought it low, so it hid, or my mind has become deranged.

He brought healing to my love-sick heart
I shall cover his grave weeping for him; I fear neither the old wine nor the ruins.
with the deeds he performed within it.
Dispelling the anguish I felt within.
The sun gave birth to him then moved away, and Fate, usually just, transgressed.

His father was honored but humbled himself
The mother of the gazelle resolved to depart, so I forgot all amusement and courtship.
who sent her glances forth as spears.
And retired in his last days from all affairs.
She broke faith with me regarding him, so the impassioned heart forgot how it once sought solace.

And bitter death tasted sweet to him,
My wound has healed since he left me
Her son, Abd al-Ghani, healed and cleared the dread from my heart.
when he saw the world was mire for us.
And closes now that he has gone away.
His father sought glory through him, but today he is humbled, so he has withdrawn.

And fearful at the calamity of his loss was
No child remains that his mother caressed,
He treated my wound then departed, so the wound that had healed bled once more.
Fihr, when he turned away and sought refuge.
The line is severed, cut off for all time.
No child crawled after him, nor did his mother find solace in pregnancy.

My son has perished: no passion remains
Fate brought me low, and so I remain,
My time weighed me down and made my grief eternal; he took shelter in the burden and bore it.
in me for this world, nor any preoccupation.
Bearing this burden until the end.
Every meaning he used to clarify in high matters became obscure when he complained of illness.

Or has the one who raised the full moon lowered it,
The meanings he expressed with such clarity
Let my soul die of its sorrow; he to whom it found comfort has departed.
so it vanished—or has my mind gone mad?
Are now jumbled and make no more sense.
Calamities severed my rope from my dwelling and my son, so there is no joy.

So I shall visit the grave, weeping for him,
Let my soul die in sorrowful longing
If God had desired my right guidance, He would have spared me the touch of degradation.
fearing neither the fawns nor the ruins.
For he who brought it peace and rest.
I burdened my soul with trouble for a bedfellow who was lawful and sweet to me.

The sun bore him, then went away;
Circumstance has severed my ties completely
Would that I had loathed the sweet water, for it resulted in choking and slipping.
and time, once just, became oppressive.
To family, dwelling, all that I held dear.
The lessons of the days say: 'Woe to him who slumbered and was heedless.'

أَزمَعَت أُمُّ الغَزالِ نَوىً

فَنَسيتُ اللَهوَ وَالغَزَلا
The gazelle's mother resolved to depart;
If God had wished me well,
The sons of the world are as if blind to it, so they perform no deeds.
so I forgot amusement and courtship.
He'd have spared me this devastation.
If a wild ass knew the circles of fate, it would not leap in terror of what descends.

She betrayed your faithful friend in me;
My spirit is troubled by what has transpired,
Victorious is he who did not settle in desire, remaining free of it without defect.
so ask, you two, how the lovestruck man found solace.
For he who was my refuge has now departed.
The world offered its goods, but he refused, rejecting all spoils but piety.

Her son, Abd al-Ghani, healed me
Would that I had avoided mistakes,
It made me swallow its bitterness today; perhaps it will follow up with honey.
and dispelled fear from my heart.
That lead to ruin and wretchedness.
My son has arrived at bliss; oh, would that the death which blocked me had arrived too.

ثُمَّ ذَلَّ اليَومَ فَاِعتَزَلا
So his father claimed kinship with glory;
The days cry out lessons
So the prayer of God, the Majestic, be upon him who has reached His good pleasure.
then today he was humbled and withdrew.
To those asleep who pay no heed.
My sins are as numerous as pebbles; where is his achievement compared to what I have accrued?

فَاِندَمى الجُرحُ الَّذي اِندَمَلا
He had healed my wound, then parted from me;
The people of this world are blind
He was of God's own fashioning; had the evil eye been deflected, he would not have withered.
so the wound that had healed bled anew.
To its snares and so do not learn.
And his beauty would have been saved from harm, leaving neither dark lips nor wide eyes to fade.

May no child crawl after him;
Had they known the dangers it hides
He strove for recovery, but blood persisted, flowing from him to wet the soil.
may his mother find no solace in pregnancy.
They'd not have ventured forth so readily.
If my night grew dark, I stayed awake for him, shedding tears until the darkness was washed away.

My fate weighed me down and left me desolate;
Happy is he who does not settle
Such is the vicissitude of time: when it unravels a matter for a youth, it twists it.
it grew fierce in its burden and carried him away.
And leaves this life free of its lures.
If sickness crushed his vitals, he returned to his Quran and recited.

The claim they made proved false: that armor preserves a hero.

Rejecting all but a righteous path.
We are in danger in the war of life; whoever says 'I will escape' speaks nonsense.

Let my soul die of its grief:
It has made me drink bitterness today,
God has appointed the time of death; if His arrow strikes a gallant man, it kills.
the one in whom it found comfort has departed.
But sweetness may come after some time.
May my father be ransom for a child whose horsemanship caused the saddles to depart from his steed.

My son has attained blessing, would that
He grew up active for the gallop, while childhood usually clothes the child in laziness.
my companion and my son; no joy remains.
Death had taken me to that sublime place.
Reason bestowed upon him dignity; he was a mountain in his forbearance.

So blessings of God upon him
If he grasped principles from me in the morning, his insights branched out from those roots.
touching the haunch would have sufficed me.
Who reached the most high destination.
The tribe of Fihr buried piety with him, along with generosity, diligence, and debate.

While my sins are countless as sand,
My son, Abd al-Ghani, did high status not reach its hope in you?
for a bedfellow lawful to me and sweet.
Beyond any recompense I can offer.
May the cup you drink bring you joy—a nectar that causes no intoxication.

Perfection that no blemish could mar.

'Woe to him who dozes and him who is heedless!'
And his blood soaked the earth where he fell.

it would not leap, for dread of what befell.

Though his childhood is now done.

the one who has reached His good pleasure.
And he rides steadfast through youthful passions.
