O Time, go gently—how long will you keep bereaving me?
O time, for how long will you mistreat me
O Time, go gently; how long will you afflict me with loss? My grief is earnest, while you merely mock me.
My grief has grown grave, while you mock me.
My resolution and determination and you are mocking me
Woe is me because of you; no sooner do I see one congratulating me on a beloved than I see one offering condolences.

Woe to me for what I see that brings humiliation
I am now divided in two: a part that is perishing and a part that remains, and you are the Divider.
on a loved one before I see someone offering condolences.
To a loved one until I see who brings condolences
You betrayed me regarding my son, who is a part of me; nay, it was God who kept His promise, so He tested me and will reward.

I am now two parts: one part perishing,
I am wounded, part of me is gone and part remains
The impulse to complain, when one can no longer bear the decrees of Fate, is the impulse of one provoked.
and one part enduring—and you are the divider.
And you are the one who wounds
I am content with what God has justly decreed; I do not turn away in aversion from what He wills.

You betrayed me in my son who is part of me
Thus does the forbearing man stand firm in great calamity, while the ignorant, self-righteous man slips.
Rather, God kept faith: He tested me and will recompense me.
But God was true, so He tested and will render judgment
What ails the branch of bliss? It has become supple, yet sways no more, though its stalk is soft.

The impulse of one who complains when he cannot bear
The tendency of the complainer when frustrated
Sickness has worn out his brocade of beauty, which once boasted over the spring with its embroidery.
fate is the impulse of one stirred to frenzy.
With fate is the tendency of the provocateur
Abd al-Ghani was a garden of beauty, adorned with gold and precious ore.

I am content with what God has decreed justly
If he challenged men while yet a boy, he would, in war, turn every opposing queen into a mere pawn.
I do not recoil from what He wills.
I am not of those who are repulsed by what He wills
He was like the Chapter of Praise: it suffices for all else in prayer, yet nothing else suffices in its place.

And so the forbearing remains steadfast in adversity
So if calamity has befallen my son, and my shamed enemy gloats over my pain;
when the impetuous fool loses his footing.
When the ignorant, impetuous one slips
By my Lord, he shall surely drink from the very cup my son drank from, for the end shall bring requital.

Why has the branch of bliss in our presence withered?
Where is Pharaoh, and those who were drowned after clear signs and plagues?
that it does not sway, though so pliant when stirred?
It does not waver, yet it is the withering of the shaker
Where is Chosroes? If you have eyes to see, his monuments have crumbled; you hear not a whisper from him.

O Grave, what have you done with a body that was once pained by the mere stitching of a robe?

He repelled in war every horseman and infantryman

Where is Chosroes? If you can see the signs
Every viper spat its venom into me the day he perished, for he was my amulet and shield.

That made him blind, you do not hear warning
A glimpse of his light was the lamp of my night, and a prayer from his mouth was the key to my treasure.

O son of the fully armed warrior who struck harm into the hearts of enemies and humiliated them with his thrust.

سرّكَ اللَهُ هَل يَسوءُكَ حَجزي
