O night of passion, when will dawn break
O Night of the lovesick man, when is his morrow?
Is the coming of the Last Hour its appointed time?
The time of reunion is its tryst
Is the Day of Judgment its appointed time?

The nighttime companions slept, but he was kept awake
The sleepless lover tossed and turned
The night-talkers have slept, but sleep eludes him,
by grief for parting, which he voices again and again.
Grief of separation repeats in him
As he repeats a lament for the separation.

The stars wept for him and blinked
The star wept for him and showed him compassion,
for the way he watches it and keeps vigil over it.
For what he feels and awaits
Because of what it watches and observes of him.

Obsessed with a graceful gazelle
He is enamored with a fawn of slender waist,
whom fear of talebearers drives away.
Fearing spies disturb its rest
Whom the fear of slanderers drives away.

In my sleep, but he was too elusive to catch.

Captivated by the gazelle of the herd.

I adore him, yet I do not worship him.

Perhaps your phantom will bring him joy.

But the circumstances of fate keep him away.

Travelers cross long distances toward you
Envoys travel vast distances to you
Travelers fold the distance toward you
by night; even their sore-eyed traveler stays awake.
Sleepless nights their camel litters trot
By night, so that even the sore-eyed remain awake.

Far-off journeys grow easy for them;
The hardship of crossing the Najd desert
The harshness of distance becomes easy for them;
their wilderness is crossed with tales of you.
Fades by talk of you, their ardour unrotten
The barren desert is folded up by the talk of you.

The East's dwellers in Tihama have proclaimed,
The East intimates your grace to its informant and helper, praising you
The East informed the Tihama
along with its dwellers in Najd, your excellence.
The eye sees you and is cured
Of your virtue, and the highlands too.

The eye sees you, bringing healing
Of its soreness and sleeplessness
The eye sees you, and by the sight,
to one with an injured eyelid, and to one with inflammation.
The East's days are blessed since only
The wounded and sore eyelid is healed.

The days of the East grew fortunate, and never
In you lies their greatest fortune
The days of the East were happy, and
did its lucky stars rise except through you.
The truth shone on its pulpits
Its lucky stars did not rise except through you.

Truth shone forth for Murcia
When its platforms hosted you
The truth illuminated Murcia,
when its fire-sticks struck sparks through you.
With justice you ended its oppressions
When your flints sparked fire within it.

With wisdom you guided its course
With justice, you suppressed its grievances,
and with sound judgment you set it straight.

And with good judgment, you guided it right.

Science for it to seek and add
You brought scholars to it, and did not
no branch of learning for it still to acquire.
You sowed goodness it will reap
Leave any knowledge without increasing it.

What is stored for it with God
You planted deeds of kindness for it,
which you will harvest in God's presence.
Its platforms shook at your name
Which you shall harvest with God.

Let he who climbs them invoke it
Its pulpit shook for your name;
let whoever ascends it invoke that name in prayer.
The Sheikh was a generous brother
Let whoever ascends it pray by that name.

The elder was a man of generosity,
Quenching those who came to him
The Sheikh was a brother of generosity,
lavishing it upon whoever sought him.
He passed away but you remained
Pouring down upon whoever sought him.

To replace him, missed by all
He passed away, and you remained for us a successor,
to every generous man we lose.
So may God protect you from evil
Replacing every noble man we lose.

May God protect you from evil for our sake,

My life’s bliss and wealth’s joy
And cover him with His mercy.

The comfort of my life has gone,
Are gone, as are their rhythms
The comfort of my life has gone,
and both newly gained and inherited wealth.
Will your lover enter a gathering
Along with my new wealth and my inherited wealth.

Must your admirer enter his sitting room
And be asked: “Is this his mosque?”
Does your lover enter his own sitting room,
and hear, 'Is this his mosque?'
No rug for me but deprivation
Only for it to be said: Is this a mosque?

There are no rugs in it, only reed mats,
may your bounty furnish it.
Send this prayer rug weaver gifts
So perhaps your favor will furnish it.

To adorn his lines in the row
So send some carpets to a man who prays,
in the row, to grace his seat.
When you grant him gifts may you not
That his seat in the row may be handsome.

Deprive his giver, include them both
And perhaps, if you grant this favor,
you will not part it from its companion.
A home needs two to be covered
You will not separate one from its companion.

Not dressed by one exposed and bare
With two, the house is covered, but
with a single one is its bareness clothed.
Join me with both, let me gain your thanks
The bare floor is not clothed by a single one.

Give me both, and win my thanks;
My praises of you will be lifelong
Gift me with both and win my gratitude,
I shall make my praise of you immortal.
Are you angry at the lies they claim?
For I will immortalize my praise of you.

You are the Master and I am the servant,
with which of your threats would you threaten him?
I have no sin deserving punishment
So with which of your threats do you threaten him?

The slanderer lied—may his hand perish!

The generosity you are accustomed to would refuse it.

That anger save you and numb you
Things occurred without my consent
that would dry up anyone but you and freeze him.
God decided that, I do not
That would diminish anyone but you and freeze him.

Also, and he will refute the slander.

If I insulted you, may my mouth be broken,
and may I have denied the Lord I worship!

And may I disbelieve in a Lord I worship.

Far be it from my manners and the radiance of my lineage
from reviling a generous man whom I praise.

To blame a noble man whom I praise.

Melting anger and expelling it
You will grant your servant forgiveness,

And old affection you will recall
Which will melt the rage and drive it away.

Renewing and reaffirming it
You will remember the old affection,

Renew it, and confirm it.

You married the sun, may your progeny thrive
Revive me, while your highness builds it up?

O Full Moon, you wedded the Sun,

So that little son is its pole star.

Welcome a meadow perfumed with words
Live safely to pave the way for religion,

Like glistening pearls its necklaces knit
And to scatter the gathering of disbelief.

Accept a graceful maiden, artfully adorned
If Jamil had composed it
Accept a tender, adorned poem,
in words like pearls, neatly strung.
For the living, it would melt their minds
Its wording like strung pearls.

I presented poetry though tired
If Jamil were to recite it
among the clan, its bashful maidens would have melted.
Your birth anniversary near
In the tribe, its maidens would melt.

I offered this poetry from far away,
How generous is my poetry in rapture
I gifted the poem from a distance,
though the source of your bounty is near.
And poetry is little that's well crafted
While the birthplace of your generosity is near.

How excellent my verse in khabab meter,
Without you its nonsense equals
How excellent is my poetry in the galloping meter,
though good poetry is scarce.
The bank's exchange and fraudulence
Though poetry has little that is truly good.

Poetry is lost to the literary man
Were it not for you, the counterfeit coin
its gold in the exchange market.
Or spent by whom coins it
Would be equal to the gold in the exchange market.

And a man of letters' poetry would go to waste,
It is on you peace of God when
And poetry would be lost to the man of culture,
unless one who appraises it sets it in circulation.
The minstrels sing your melody
Or spent by the one who critiques it.

So peace from God be upon you, as long as

The warbling bird sings in the thicket.
