رابَه عِلَّتِي ضَنىً فأَتانِي
عائِداًvisiting the sick فيin يَدِهِhis hand ليfor me ياسَمِينُjasmine
عائِداً في يَدِهِ لي ياسَمِينُ
My wasting illness troubled him, so he came to me,
My wasting illness alarmed him, so he came to me,
My longing afflicted me with grief, but then
My illness and wasting away alarmed him, so he came,
paying a sick call, with jasmine for me in his hand.
To visit me in my illness, with jasmine for me in his hand.
He returned to me, jasmine in his hand.
Visiting me, with jasmine in his hand.
فتفاءلْتُso I took it as a good omen أنَّهthat he قدindeed تهَدَّىfound the right way
فتفاءلْتُ أنَّه قد تهَدَّى

لهُزالي فقَال لي يا سَمِينُ
I took it as a good omen that he had noticed
So I took it as a good omen that he had found the right response
So I hoped he had relented
I took it as a good omen for my emaciation,
my emaciation—but he said to me, “O stout one!”
To my emaciation, and said to me, 'O plump one!'
Of rejecting me, but he said "O chubby one"
As if he said to me: "O Plump One!"
