وَفَتنيkept faith with me دُموعُtears العَينِthe eye وَالصَبرُand patience خانَنيbetrayed me
فَجُرِّعتso I was made to drink فيin حُبّيmy love لَكَfor you المُرَّthe bitter وَالحُلواand the sweet
My eye's tears kept faith with me, while patience betrayed me.
My tears remained loyal to me, while patience betrayed me,
So in my love for you I was made to drink the bitter and the sweet.
And in my love for you, I was made to drink the bitter and the sweet.
وَضِقتُand I was overwhelmed بِهذاby this الحُبِّlove ذرعاًin endurance وَحيلَةًand resourcefulness
فَحَتّىso until مَتىwhen أَشكوI complain وَلاand not تَنفَعُavails الشَكوىcomplaint
And this love exhausted my endurance and my resourcefulness.
I have grown utterly weary of this love, bereft of strength and stratagem,
So how long shall I complain, when complaint is of no use?
So how long must I complain, when complaint brings no relief?
وَهَبتُكَI gave you حَظّيmy share مِنof سرورٍjoy وَلذَّةٍand pleasure
فَجازَيتَنيso you repaid me أَنthat زِدتُI was given more بَلوىaffliction عَلىupon بَلوىaffliction
I gave you my share of joy and pleasure.
I surrendered to you my share of joy and pleasure,
So you repaid me with affliction heaped upon affliction.
Yet you repaid me by heaping affliction upon affliction.
وَشىslandered عِندَكَbefore you الواشونَthe slanderers بيagainst me فَهَجَرتَنيso you forsook me
وَحَمَّلتَنيand you burdened me فيin الحُبِّlove ماwhat لَمnot أَكُنI was أَقوىable to bear
Slanderers spoke against me before you, so you forsook me.
Slanderers maligned me in your presence, so you abandoned me,
And in love you burdened me with what I had no strength to bear.
And burdened me in love with more than I could bear.
وَلَوand if only أَنَّنيthat I إِذwhen كُنتُI was عِندَكَin your eyes مُذنِباًguilty
وَجَدتُI found سَبيلاًa way حَيثُwhere أَسأَلكَI ask you for العَفواpardon
And if only, when I was guilty in your eyes,
If indeed I had been a sinner in your eyes,
I had found a way to ask your pardon.
I would have found a path to beg for your pardon.
وِصالُكَunion with you ليfor me مُحيٍlife-giving وَهَجرُكَand your estrangement قاتِليmy killer
وَحُبُّكَand love for you شَغلٌa preoccupation كُنتُI was مِنfrom قَبلِهِbefore it خِلواfree
Union with you gives me life, and your estrangement kills me.
Union with you is my life, and your desertion is my slayer;
And love for you is a preoccupation from which I was once free.
Your love is an occupation for a heart that was once carefree.
وَقَفتُI stood عَلىby آثارِthe traces of وَصلِكَunion with you بِالحِمىin the protected grounds
وَأَنكَرتُand I did not recognize صَبريmy patience فيamong مَعالِمِهاits landmarks شَجواin grief
I stood by the traces of union with you in the protected grounds.
I stood over the fading traces of our union at the sanctuary,
And amid its landmarks, in grief, I could not recognize my patience.
And amidst those landmarks, renounced my patience in grief.
وَقُلتُand I said لِعَينيto my eye وَيحَكِalas for you الآنَnow فَاِسجميso pour forth
دُموعاًtears كَماjust as قَدalready كُنتِyou had زِدتِyou increased بِهِthere لَهواjoy
And I said to my eye: “Alas for you! Now pour forth
I said to my eye: "Woe to you, now pour forth
tears, as you once added to the joy there.
Tears, just as you once overflowed with delight in him."
وَحَقِّby the sanctity of الهَوىlove لاmay not ذُقتyou taste غمضاًsleep وَلاnor رَقَتcease flowing
دُموعكyour tears أَوuntil تُحييyou revive المَحَلَّthe dwelling-place الَّذيthat أَقوىbecame deserted
By the sanctity of love, may you taste no sleep, nor may
By the holy truth of Passion, you shall taste no sleep, nor shall
your tears cease until you revive the dwelling-place that lies deserted.”
Your tears run dry, until you revive this desolate ground.
وُرودُgoing to the waters of الرَدىdeath أَولىis preferable وَإِنeven if عيفَis loathed وردُهُits draught
لِمَنfor one who باتَspends the night ظَمآناًthirsty إِلىfor ريقthe saliva of مَنthe one whom يَهوىhe loves
Going to death's waters is better, though its draught be loathed,
To drink from the pool of death is worthier—though its draught be loathed—
for one who spends the night thirsty for the saliva of the one he loves.
For one who passes the night thirsting for the lips of the one he loves.
