شَفاعَةintercession مِنكَfrom you أَرتَجيهاI hope for it
يَومَthe day قُدوميmy arrival عَلىbefore الإلهِGod
I hope for intercession from you
Intercession from you I hope for
I hope for intercession from you,
on the day I come before God.
On the day I come before God
On the day I come before the Divine.
هَمّيmy grief غَداbecame هِمَّتيmy aspiration مِنfrom ابنيmy son
سَلامَتيmy salvation سُلَّمُthe ladder of التَباهيpride
My hope from my son has become my grief;
My anxiety has become my concern for my son
My sorrow has become my sole concern regarding my son,
my salvation is the ladder to pride.
My wellbeing I have surrendered to boasting
My salvation is the ladder of all glory.
هِلاليmy crescent moon النَيِّرradiant المُحَيّاthe countenance
وَبَحريand my sea الطَيِّبsweet المِياهِthe waters
My crescent moon of radiant countenance,
My crescent moon, bright and lively
My crescent moon, with radiant countenance,
and my sea of sweet waters.
And my sea, good and watered
And my sea of sweet, pure waters.
هَجَعتُI slumbered فيin بَرزَخِthe limbo of المَناياmortal fates
فَهَلso is there سَبيلٌa way إِلىto اِنتِباهِawakening
I slumbered in death's limbo;
I slept in the isthmus of death
I have slumbered in the isthmus of death,
so is there a way to awaken?
Is there a way to awaken?
Is there any way to awaken?
هَدَّدَنيthreatened me الدَهرُTime قُمrise وَإِلّاand if not
قَضىpassed judgment عَلىagainst اللَيثِthe lion لِلشِياهِfor the sheep
Time threatened me: rise, or else
Time threatened me, “Get up or else
Time threatened me: "Rise, or else..."
it would rule against the lion in favor of the sheep.
The lion will be killed by the jackal”
"It shall decree the lion fall before the sheep."
هَدَمتُI demolished ماwhat كُنتُI was أَبتَنيهِI build it
مِنof شَرَفٍhonor باذِخٍlofty وَجاهِand prestige
I demolished what I had been building
I destroyed what I had built
I have demolished what I once built,
of lofty honor and prestige.
Of towering and prominent glory
Of lofty honor and high status.
هَدَدتُI tore down طودthe mountain of الحلومforbearance مِنّيfrom me
تَرَكتُI left عَيشيmy life بِلاwithout مهاهِluster
I tore down the mountain of forbearance within me;
I threatened the highlands with myself
I have leveled the mountain of my forbearance,
I left my life bereft of luster.
Leaving my life without purpose
I have left my life void of its luster.
هَجَرتَنيyou forsook me أَمor شُغِلتَyou were distracted عَنّيfrom me
حاشاfar be رَشيداًa wise man مِنَfrom السفاهِfolly
Have you forsaken me, or been distracted from me?
Did you abandon me or were you preoccupied from me?
Have you abandoned me, or are you kept from me?
Far be a wise man from folly!
Far be it from the wise to be reckless
Far be it for one so wise to act with folly.
هَلis there مُسعِدٌa consoler بِالبُكاwith weeping مُعينٌa helper
داهيتيmy calamity أَعظَمُthe greatest of الدَواهيcalamities
Is there a consoler to join my weeping and help?
Is one made happy by crying? Is one helped by being lost?
Is there anyone to share in this weeping, to lend aid?
My calamity is the greatest of calamities.
My troubles are the greatest troubles
For my calamity is the greatest of disasters.
هَبsuppose رَوضَتيmy garden صوحَتwithered فَأَنّىso how
تَقَلَّصَتshriveled أَحسَنthe fairest of الشِفاهِthe lips
Suppose my garden has withered—how, then,
My meadow withered, so where
Even if my garden has withered, how is it
have the fairest lips shriveled?
Are the best lips
That the loveliest of lips have faded away?
هَوىdesire النُفوسِthe souls اِعتَدىtransgressed عَلَيهاagainst them
إِنَّindeed الهَوىdesire آمِرٌcommanding وَناهِand forbidding
The souls' desire has wronged them;
Passion of souls transgressed against them
The desire of souls has trespassed against them,
indeed, desire commands and forbids.
Indeed, passion commands and prohibits
For passion is the one who commands and forbids.
هَلّاwhy not اِهتَدىfound guidance مَنthe one who أَضَلَّmisled others هَلّاwhy not
Why did he who misled others not find guidance? Why did not
If only those astray are guided, if only
Why did the one who strayed not find guidance? Why not?
every heedless soul remember death?
Every heedless remembers death
Let every oblivious soul remember death.
هذيthese المَناياmortal fates لَهاthey have سِهامٌarrows
كُلُّevery جَديدٍnew thing رَمَتهُthey shot it واهِfrail
These mortal fates have arrows;
These deaths have arrows
These fates possess arrows,
every new thing they strike is frail.
Each new target it has hit and missed
Leaving every new thing they strike in ruin.
هُدىًguidance وَنوراًand light بِكُلِّin every قَلبٍheart
باتَspent the night عَنِof اللَهِGod غَيرَnot لاهِheedless
May guidance and light be in every heart
As guidance and light in every heart
Let there be guidance and light in every heart,
that spends the night not heedless of God.
That has turned away from God, inattentive
That passes the night mindful, not distracted from God.
هانَتbecame insignificant عَلَيَّto me الحَياةُlife لَمّاwhen
فارَقَنيleft me مَنthe one who بِهِin him أباهيI take pride
Life became of little worth to me when
Life became cheap to me when
Life became worthless to me the moment
the one in whom I take pride left me.
The one I take pride in left me
I was parted from the one who was my pride.
