He who was one of the noble lords has perished;
He who was of the Ghatafan,
Those who were the noble masters have perished,
everyone near and far revered them.
The greatest of them, every settled and nomad,
The greatest of them, the settled and the far-roaming.

A people whom generosity nearly leaves
A people whom generosity would almost leave,
A people whom Generosity is on the verge of abandoning,
without even a remnant of their taxable wealth.
Not a bit of it left for them, and abasement,
Though in their lineage lies no shortcoming.

They adorned their mounts' necks, and made
They put off their polished morality, and showed
They unbound the necks of their riding-camels and watered
every long-necked one appear short-necked.
Every long expectation, that one of want.
Every long-necked beast and those of shortened neck.
