Give back the last breath of a forsaken lover,
Restore the last spark of life to a forsaken lover,
Return the longing of an abandoned lover
Restore the last breath of a forsaken lover, caught between those who blame him for loving you and those who excuse him.
suspended, because of you, between blame and pardon.
caught between being blamed and excused for loving you.
Between the one blamed and the one excused
Before the strung pearls of your smile, his tears poured forth like pearls scattered and broken.

To rival the pearls strung within your mouth, there sprang forth
In answer to the strung pearls in your mouth sprang forth
For the strung pearls in your mouth have shone
He remembered the parting and died, leaving only his longing; for the victims of love are dead men without graves.
his tears, like pearls scattered loose.
his tears, like scattered pearls.
Their tears like scattered pearls
I bade farewell to the one I love—nay, I entrusted to her keeping my heart, the secret of my tears, and my heavy sighs.

He thought of parting and died—only his longing lived on;
He recalled parting and died—save for his longing;
He remembered separation, so his longing died
She wept with two narcissus eyes I feared to harm, so I kissed them not, save with my inner soul.
for lovers are dead, though they lie in no graves.
and those in love are dead without graves.
And the passionate died without graves
She said, "Do you depart while your loved ones are right here?" I replied, "Destiny, as you know, is inescapable."

She asked, "When is the return?" I answered, "When the decree of the Lord, the Ordainer of fates, is fulfilled."

my heart and the secret of my tears and sighs.
My heart, the secret of my tears, and my sighs
Perhaps He who parted us will unite us once again; for truly, the difficult is never difficult for Him.

Then she wept with two narcissus blooms; I feared they would be harmed by
She wept for my narcissi and I felt sorry for them
And even if He whom you know refuses now, perhaps events will unfold to undo the state of things.
so I kissed them only in my inmost thought.
my breath, so I kissed them only in my mind.
My soul did not kiss but my conscience
Do not despair at the world's calamity, even if it worsens; for how often does a sorrow lead to joy.
