How strange! It warred against me over you and wore me down—

Time, which had persisted in peace.

Scarcely had it brought my breast relief from hostile folk

Through you, when it sapped my arm’s strength and bit me.

And it showed me in you, my son, a lesson

Through which it gathered my sorrows when it admonished me.

It split the hard rock within me, until there flowed from

My eye water, though I was hard-hearted indeed.

O crescent of good fortune, mankind could not tell

Whether he scattered pearls upon them or spoke.
