نَجمُstar العُلاglory نَجليmy son هَوىhas fallen
نَجمُ العُلا نَجلي هَوى
دَعlet لَوعَتيmy anguish تَلتَهِبِblaze
دَع لَوعَتي تَلتَهِبِ
My son, the star of glory, has fallen.
The star of eminence, my son, has fallen,
Let my anguish blaze.
So leave my anguish to blaze unhindered;
لَمdid not أَلهُI dally بِالحَسناءِwith the fair one مُذsince
لَم أَلهُ بِالحَسناءِ مُذ
أَودىhe perished وَلَمand did not تَلتَهِshe dallies بيwith me
أَودى وَلَم تَلتَهِ بي
I have not dallied with the fair one since
I have not dallied with the fair beauty since
he perished, nor has she dallied with me.
He perished, and she has ceased to beguile me.
