والحِمَى لم يَدْنُ نازِحُهُ
Has the jester in your love turned earnest,
Has the jester in love for you grown earnest,
I love you with a passion where jest has turned to earnestness,
while the one far from the sanctuary has not drawn near?
while the sanctuary's far-off wanderer has not drawn near?
Though the sanctuary remains distant, and the exile draws no nearer.
مارَسَتْcontended with منّيin me العِدَاthe foes رَجُلاًa man
مارَسَتْ منّي العِدَا رَجُلاً
أَسْمَعَmade hear الصماءَthe deaf rock صَائحُهُhis crier
أَسْمَعَ الصماءَ صَائحُهُ
The foes have tested in me a man
In me, my foes have faced a man
The enemies have encountered in me a man
whose cry made even the deaf hear.
whose crier made the deaf rock hear.
Whose shout makes even the deaf hear.
إِنْif زَجَرْتُI roused for omens الطّيرَthe birds فيduring سَفَريmy journey

If I seek an omen from the birds on my journey,
If I roused the birds for omens on my journey,
If I seek omens from the birds upon my journey,
an auspicious one passes by on my right.
their bird of good omen passed on my right.
The auspicious one passes propitiously on my right.

يومَ أَصمى القلبَ جارِحُهُ
Asmāʾ marveled at my fortitude
Asma marveled at my fortitude
Asma marveled at my steadfast endurance,
the day the heart’s assailant struck it through.
the day its wounder struck the heart dead.
On the day the wounder pierced the heart.
