فَلَقَدfor indeed أَسلَفَhe lent in advance أَزكىthe purest سَلَفa loan
فَلَقَد أَسلَفَ أَزكى سَلَف
وَلَقَدand indeed خَلَفَhe provided a replacement خَلفاa replacement وَرَعىand he showed care
وَلَقَد خَلَفَ خَلفا وَرَعى
For he had indeed advanced the purest loan;
He has surely sent forth the purest of precedents,
And he had indeed provided a replacement and shown care.
And left behind a successor whom he tended;
خانَhe betrayed فيin the matter of عَبدِservant of الغنيّthe Self-Sufficient اِبنيmy son وَماand what
خانَ في عَبدِ الغنيّ اِبني وَما
ذاthat عَلَيهِupon him لَوif وَفىhe kept faith ليwith me وَرَعىand he showed care
ذا عَلَيهِ لَو وَفى لي وَرَعى
He betrayed me in ʿAbd al-Ghanī, my son—and what
He dealt falsely with my son, Abd al-Ghani—yet what
would it have cost him, had he kept faith with me and shown care?
Would it have cost him had he been faithful to me and mindful?
