O you whose eye is lined

O you whose eye is kohl-lined

O she whose eyes are lined

O you whose glance is lined with kohl,

with magic, not antimony—

with magic, not with antimony.

With magic, not with kohl,

By magic, not by antimony stone,

نَفْسي كما عذّبتها

نَفْسي كما عذّبتها

وقتلِتها بالإِثم دي

وقتلِتها بالإِثم دي

my soul, as you have tormented it

My soul—since you have tormented it

My soul-how I have tortured it

My soul—just as you have tormented it,

and wrongfully slain it, indemnify!

and killed it sinfully—pay its blood-price.

And killed it with my sin!

And slain it with this very sin.
