When the enemy’s blood stains the keen white blades,
When the blood of foes stains the white, keen swords,
When the eggs are dyed red by the blood of enemies
If the blood of enemies dyes the sharp white blades,
my tears, mourning you, stain my cheek more deeply.
then my tears stain my cheek more deeply at the news of your death.
My tears on my cheek dyeing your elegy
My tears upon my cheek, in mourning you, leave a deeper stain.
كَأَنَّكَas though you are فيin السَبعِthe seven القِراءاتِQur’anic readings طاهِرṬāhir
كَأَنَّكَ في السَبعِ القِراءاتِ طاهِر
وَفيand in الشِعرِpoetry غَيلانGhaylān وَفيand in الفِقهِjurisprudence أَصبَغُAṣbagh
وَفي الشِعرِ غَيلان وَفي الفِقهِ أَصبَغُ
In the seven canonical Readings, you seemed Ṭāhir himself;
You are like Ṭāhir in the seven Qur’anic readings,
As if you were pure in the seven recitations
As though you were, in the Seven Readings, Tahir,
in poetry, Ghaylān; and in jurisprudence, Aṣbagh.
and Ghaylān in poetry, and Aṣbagh in jurisprudence.
And a torrent in poetry and a master in jurisprudence
And in poetry, Ghaylan; and in jurisprudence, Asbagh.
