A calamity befell ʿAbd al-Ghani,
A calamity befell ʿAbd al-Ghanī,
A sudden calamity befell Abdal Ghani
A sudden affliction has befallen Abd al-Ghani,
pouring tenderness and pity upon him.
Pouring tenderness and compassion upon him.
It poured upon him affection and compassion
Pouring out tenderness and compassion upon him.
بَياضُهُhis whiteness وَاِحمِرارُهُand his redness ذَهَباboth vanished
بَياضُهُ وَاِحمِرارُهُ ذَهَبا

لا البَدرُ زاهي الضِيا وَلا الشَفَقا
His fair whiteness and rosy blush both vanished—
His whiteness and redness have vanished—
His paleness and blushing became gold
His fair complexion and rosy flush have vanished;
no full moon radiant with light, and no twilight glow.
Not the full moon, radiant with light, nor the twilight glow.
Neither the radiant full moon nor the glowing sunset
Neither the full moon is radiant with light, nor the twilight glow.
