and my soul's solace has saddened it.

God effaced it, when He had brightened

the world with it and adorned it.

of the most precious of treasures:

a radiant one—had my allotted span ended,

the Arabs would have called him their most eloquent,

    their finest poet and orator,

    their strongest sword-striker and spear-thruster.

And another, before it was dictated

for him to write, he had learned by heart.

    verses, he mastered them.

    His tutor could not fathom

his recitation, and judged it faulty.

    No wonder at my jewel—

is not the sea its mine?

Am I not his father, and he my son?

And he proved that this was so.

My soul's beloved, while I sustained it

with him, died and left it weak.

on the morning of fear he will make it safe.

from the fiercest blaze and the mildest,

and washed it with his Kawthar,

then sanctified it and kept it safe,

    and embalmed it with prayers,

    and shrouded it in light,

and settled it in the earth—no, rather,

in the gardens of eternity he settled it.'

what ails Time, that it has made them stagnant?

it has grievously wounded the lions among its sons.

how vile it is, and how beguiling!

How quick to sever ties when it has embraced

those who love it—how treacherous it is!

And how readily it buries a newborn alive,

    sinking its claw into him!

I see life's fierce one, tomorrow,

leaving it—and its gentle one too.

So why should I be deluded by it?

Do I not see its betrayals?

Beloved of my heart, join my lip

to your kiss, wherever it may reach.

that You may show mercy, O its Guardian.

    فَوَفّقني لِأُحسِنها

    I have done wrong in all my deeds;

so enable me to make them good.
